Rich, velvety wine, with its firm tannins smothered in opulent fruit. This is a concentrated wine, packing sweet fruits and tannins together with acidity. Black plum skins give a good firm edge and suggest aging potential.

A crisp style of Alvarinho, packed with green fruits, apples and lemon along with richer pink grapefruit. There is an attractive tangy minerality as well, giving a satisfying full-in-the-mouth wine.

The cooler climate of the far north-east of Portugal allows this creamy Chardonnay to also have good fresh acidity balancing its layers of wood. It is not complex, but is a fine, well-made, lively wine.

A classically austere Douro wine, firmly held in place by tight tannins and a sense of minerality. The wine, though, has plenty of powerful fruit under this structure. It needs time for those tannins to soften, and the juicy black and red berry fruits to show their stuff.

One of the best wines to come out of the Real Companhia, this finely structured wine shows distinct austerity and minerality as well as dark, young tannins and packed black fruits. The balance is all there, a wine that keeps the wood in check, allowing the great fruits to come through.

Paired with a similarly powerful Touriga Nacional-based wine, this has some elegance as well as all that richness. It is dark, dense and concentrated, but the fruit shows fine, dusty tannins, firm dry berries and freshness. It has a wild herbal character, which adds further complexity.

A ripe Alvarinho, full of warm fruit flavors, but also shot through with a mineral texture, cool grapefruit and apple flavors and precise, crisp acidity. Coming from vineyards in the Douro, it is richer than many Vinho Verde Alvarinhos, but the aristocratic fruit character is all there.

Made, very unusually for the Douro, from Sémillon, this botrytis affected wine gives ripe dried apricot and white fig flavors, boosted by the dry core of botrytis, and finishing with acidity. Definitely unexpected, but it succeeds well.
