This is a sweet and floral Ripasso with aromas of fresh blackberry, pressed roses and exotic spice. There’s also a touch of cider or dried apple skins that helps to keep this wine buoyant and vibrant. The mouthfeel is sharp, cleansing and compact. —M.L.

This is a beautiful style of Amarone: Powdered chocolate and cherry aromas are made more buoyant and vibrant by a colorful supporting cast of root beer, cola, menthol, wild apple and almond amaretto. A wine like this offers enormous intensity to both the nose and the palate and leaves a long lasting trail of harmony and freshness.

This is an aged and elegant Amarone that shows a dark garnet color with slight amber highlights. Tertiary aromas of spice, leather, dried tobacco, lavender and candied fruit fill the bouquet and the wine shows lively sweetness and fullness on the palate. The 2003 vintage was very hot and you can feel the wine’s power and determination.

The Recchia brothers, Riccardo and Roberto, are among the area’s largest private owners. They sell fruit and juice but keep the best selections for their own production. The 2001 Amarone boasts a pretty ruby color and is redolent of cherry, cedar wood, almond paste, cola, resin and coffee. It has a chewy, sticky consistency and excellent purity of flavors.
