Since coming into existence in 1988, this winery has made rich, modern reds that represent the best of what new-age Rioja is about. And the 2001 could be the best yet, as it offers aromas of rose petals, fresh lemon, cola, soy, coffee, leather and more. Definitely a powerhouse, with huge fruit from front to back. Lively in terms of tannins, with the expected monster oak. Employs 10% Graciano in addition to Tempranillo.

Thick, brooding and aromatically mature, this delivers heft, grab and balance. It has developed black-fruit flavors followed by a cushioned, soft finish. Drink now and over the next several years as the 2001 gets better and the promising but not yet released 2004 begins to settle. Imported by Tempranillo, Inc.

Remírez de Ganuza has a track record of excellence, and this is yet another dense, deep, sultry Rioja that has become customary. Reflecting the warm ’06 vintage, the wine is chunky in the mouth, with thick blackberry, boysenberry, chocolate and almond candy flavors. It’s toasty and dark on the finish, but also a touch soft, much like chocolate cake. Drink now through 2014.

Dark in color, with dynamite bacon, boysenberry and lavender aromas. Quite a saturated wine, with smoke and earth surrounding cola and dried fruit. This is killer Rioja, one with all the trimmings. There’s racy spice, pencil lead and push. Sensationally snazzy and stylish.

Round, stylish and wholesome on the nose, with wild berry, smoke, spice and not too much obvious oak. The palate is racy and forward, but also offers subtleties including dry fruit, spice, fresh tomato and wild herbs such as thyme and sage. Long and warm on the finish, with vanilla. Drink now through 2015.

A juicy, prickly wine with pungent red-fruit aromas backed by tangy cherry, raspberry and currant flavors. It’s firm and tight, entirely reflective of the cool vintage, and the bet here is that it’s unlikely to ever lose that inherent toughness. Needs food to absorb the crispness. Tight, pure and just right from start to finish. The nose offers bold berry, roasted plum, vanilla and spice aromas along with exceptional clarity, and the palate is snappy and pure but also dark and loaded with coffee, chocolate, mocha and fine raspberry and cherry flavors. Slightly oaky but smooth late, and composed. Drink now through 2014.

Nice, brawny and integrated, with sexy aromas of wild berry, dark plum, leather and earth. The palate has the right weight and tannic grab, while the flavors of black fruit, fine herbs, cola and coffee are measured yet generous. Finishes with driving chocolate and vanilla flavors. Drink now through 2016.

Concentrated to the hilt, with molten black fruit, coconut and mint aromas. The palate is driven, tannic, pure and features dynamite flavors of black fruit, bitter chocolate and spice cake. So beautiful and big, but also showing elegance and restraint. Drinkable now but will age well for another seven years or more.

Purple in color and meaty on the nose, with a hint of raisin and reduction but not too much. Due to the heat of 2003, this is a ripe, rich wine with big plum and berry flavors but also good balance and feel. It covers all the bases and finishes in a smooth, solid, stylish way. Just reaches the cut of excellence.
