Green olive and white pepper—then a hint of caraway—lead the nose. Flavors of blackberry and a chalky finish end this wine. A bit awkward but interesting if you like a green wine. —C.S.

Chances are you’ve seen this nondescript white before. While it would like to capture the spirit of Barcelona and the Costa Brava, it doesn’t really have much to offer. Dig deep for some peach and petrol aromas and stone-fruit flavors, while the bright acidity and mostly clean flavors save it from oblivion.

Still not sure what the secret is behind this nonvintage white blend, but my sample was fresh, floral, soft and welcoming. It showed a fleshy but healthy feel and pineapple and green plum flavors. Fresh and sweet on the finish, with enough acidity to work with food. As good as this wine gets.

Cherry, fleshy red fruit flavors and a light, dilute mouthfeel are prefaced by earthy, resiny notes on the nose. Juicy cranberry and plum flavors, plus some wood, round out the short finish. Tasted twice.

Loads of oak over golden apple fruit and mild tropical notes make this a New World wannabe. It’s medium weight but overblown, and the flavors are fundamentally out of balance. Still, there are some folks who just want a little fruit with their oak. —M.M.

Very light, even thin, this white lacks the stuffing sought in a simple quaffing white. There are no overtly off-putting elements here, there’s just not much here at all. —M.M.

This simple summer sipper is clean, fresh and grassy, with aromas of apple and green melon. Surprisingly mouthfilling for something so easygoing, but still packed with melon and citrus flavors. Fresh and zesty, and just right for patio parties. Imported by Freixenet USA.

Expert NoteJanuary 12, 2012
By the sheer fact that this wine costs $6 and never really goes up in price, it holds onto its tenuous value status via clean tropical aromas and mild flavors of lime, pineapple and citrus. It’s a touch hot and burning on the finish, but finish isn’t what you’re banking on with a wine like this. Imported by Freixenet, USA.

Past its prime and tasting like apple juice and kumquats. Decent acidity is all that’s keeping it alive. Wait for a newer vintage.

If you catch this salmon-colored sweety when it's fresh and chilled, it will fit the bill with ease. It offers spicy gumdrop aromas offset by strawberry, while the flavor profile centers around peach, cherry and melon. Has residual sugar but also enough natural fruit and acids to handle it.
