Expert NoteJanuary 12, 2012
Pietro Ratti makes wines from vineyards around the Abbey of the Annunziata, locally called the Marcenasco. This single-vineyard Rocche is deep brick red in color. With its brooding black-fruit aromas and firm, dry tannins over immense fruit flavors, it is a huge wine, showing great potential. It should keep forever.

Ratti’s Conca single-vineyard wine is made only in selected vintages. Aged in small French and large Slavonian oak barrels, the wine is full of aromas of violets and old-fashioned roses. The palate is deliciously open, with ripe fruits, flavors of dark cherries and plums. A dry, tannic layer gives it structure, the acidity gives it freshness.

Expert NoteJanuary 12, 2012
This is the third wine Ratti makes from its Marcenasco vineyard at La Morra. Aromas of fine ripe fruit and a hint of truffles lead to powerful, rich fruit flavors with layers of tarry dryness. A great, ripe wine, destined for long aging.

Expert NoteJanuary 12, 2012
This bright Dolcetto from Renato Ratti opens with a dark, inky color and well concentrated fruit aromas of blueberry and cherry. Those big fruit tones are enhanced by the wine’s full color and polished finish. Very nice and well priced too.

Marcenasco really comes through this vintage in terms of power, elegance and harmony. There are spice and herbal notes mixed in with almond, vanilla and allspice. You’ll love the sensation of wholeness and harmony here. Drink this opulent wine with filet mignon with wild mushroom cream sauce.

Expert NoteJanuary 12, 2012
Marcenasco is an extremely polished wine with pristine aromas of black fruit and spice. It has a smooth but firm feel in the mouth and boasts a sophisticated garnet color with amber accents. Try it with agnolotti al sugo (stuffed ravioli-like pasta in meat sauce).

Expert NoteJanuary 12, 2012
Dark in color with a modern style and velvety extraction, the gorgeous Marcenasco expression of Barolo is redolent of blackberries, cherries, spice, leather and tobacco. The finish is long and elegant but not without power and determination. Keep this wine cellared for ten years plus.

Expert NoteJanuary 12, 2012
Conca shares the extraordinary intensity demonstrated by Ratti’s Rocche cru, but is also distinguished by a delicate, more feminine side. The wine is beautifully stretched over fine aromas of exotic spice, white chocolate, dried flowers and blackberries. It ends with power and determination but does so in a charming, less overt manner.

Expert NoteJanuary 12, 2012
While more structured than the other Ratti Barolos, it does not have quite enough fruit to keep it balanced. The nose has muted plum, wood-smoke, cloves and licorice. The flavors are not intense enough to balance the hard tannins and the alcohol. Therelatively short finish suggests that even with time, it will never really come into balance.

Expert NoteJanuary 12, 2012
Little doubt from the nose what the grape was: archetypal Sauvignon Blanc. Lots of hay, wet grass a touch of green plums. Promising a lot, but really fell down on the palate, which was light and totally lacked the oomph and intensity promised by the nose.
