Expert NoteJanuary 12, 2012
The weakest of Rex Hill’s three single-vineyard 2000s, although still a very good wine. Opens with a blast of smoky, well-charred sweet oak, caramel and white chocolate, with subtle blackberry and cherry scents. Oaky and fruity, with a long, spicy finish. —S.H.

Mostly neutral oak is used in this budget bottling, but a hint of toast comes through, and adds interest to the soft, ripe, banana flavors. A bit more concentration than the unwooded Chardonnay from Rex Hill.

Medium-bodied with spice, citrus and melon flavors, this vineyard designate keeps its focus and finishes with a nice lift of savory spice.

Expert NoteJanuary 12, 2012
Much like the winery’s regular Pinot Gris in this hot year, this wine is ripe and fruity, and benefits from a higher percentage of Carabella vineyard fruit, and a higher percentage elevated in oak, albeit neutral.

It’s all about the fruit here, with a mix of tropical flavors across a broad, friendly palate. Not a California-style fruit-bomb, but fresh and plenty ripe.

Expert NoteJanuary 12, 2012
A soft, broad palate makes this wine instantly accessible, and it is fine for near term drinking, though not likely to hold well in the cellar. Compared with many of the winery’s other Pinot Gris bottlings, this Willamette Valley blend is a bit fuzzy and unfocused.

A perplexing wine that should be better than it is. It’s fairly dense and concentrated, with good depth of flavor. Beets, tomatoes, blackberries, sugared espresso and a myriad of crushed, dusty oriental spices fill the mouth. It’s good and dry, with crisp acids and easy tannins. So what’s the problem? It just lacks that extra kick. Maybe Rex Hill is diverting the best fruit to their three expensive Pinots.
