Expert NoteJanuary 12, 2012
Forward, expressive plum and raspberry fruit would leap from the glass were it not reigned in by a healthy dose of oak. Brambly, tomatoey—even Bourbonlike—accents waft from the nose. Medium-bodied, this Tempranillo, Garnacha and Mazuelo blend is a natural match for tapas, paella, or gambas al ajillo. Best Buy. —D.M.

Stemmy and leathery smelling, with heat, roasted fruit and cheesy aromas. The palate is full but soupy, with roasted, baked black fruit flavors. A bit of cinnamon and spice help out the finish, but by then the wine’s very average fate has been sealed.

Expert NoteJanuary 12, 2012
Lightly stemmy and brambly, with lean red fruit aromas, a touch of saline and red licorice candy. The palate is lean and sort of scratchy, while the flavors are suggestive of red apple skins and red plum. Tight on the finish; similar is some ways to a simple Chianti.

Expert NoteJanuary 12, 2012
Spearmint and untamed wild berry aromas start it down a slope that ends with a palate that’s hot and heavy with fruit but devoid of balance and touch. There’s a lot of this and that, namely vanilla and oak. But overall the wine just gets it together.

Cheerful but basic raspberry aromas and flavors is what this young Rioja is about. It feels a little bulky at first, and then acids swell up to cut it short. Almost snappy in the late innings.

Expert NoteJanuary 12, 2012
Good overall, but with a few holes. The nose features dried red fruits, mint, dillweed and spice, while the medium-bodied palate has a slight green underbelly along with plum and raspberry on the edges. Smacks the cheeks on the finish, and then coasts away with a dry, herbal essence.

Expert NoteJanuary 12, 2012
Candied cherry and raspberry aromas are anything but complex or serious, while the palate is lean, sheering, crisp and more tart than flavorful. Scouring on the finish, and not really offering much of anything.

Expert NoteJanuary 12, 2012
Standard red fruit aromas turn less clean and more earthy with air. A wet, acidic style of Rioja with lean, hot red fruit and a peppery, dry finish. Basic and a little bitter; needs food like salty tapas to have a chance.

Strawberry, tea and sandalwood aromas make for an interesting, unusual bouquet. This is a fresh, young wine that shouldn’t solicit much contemplation, but will register positively due to its light, smooth feel. It’s medium in depth, with airy finishing notes of mushroom and cherry.

Expert NoteJanuary 12, 2012
Smells fairly burnt and dull, with earthy, stemmy aromas that are strained and tough. The palate reflects the nose with heavy, roasted, leathery plum flavors that finish with a meaty thud. Rustic and stemmy, with a low pulse.
