With its aromas of smoke, mineral, blackberries and blueberries, this Douro blend tastes like a dry Port—without the alcohol, tannins or sugar that relegate Port to the end of the meal. Drink now–2010.

Toast and vanilla notes from oak barrels are layered over aromas of cured meat and blackberries. On the palate, it’s lush but not overly weighty or rich, just nicely balanced. There’s plenty of spicy oak, especially on the finish, but also the fruit to support it.

A big, burly wine with a firmly tannic finish, the 1999 Praemium needs a few years to shed its youthfulness. The subtle toast and vanilla notes are in proportion with the intense blackberry fruit, and it picks up some coffee notes on the finish.
