Expert NoteJanuary 12, 2012
Pleasingly plump, this soft white grape blend shows pear and melon aromas and flavors. Definitely low-acid, but this vaguely Viognier-like wine finishes drier and longer than expected.

Expert NoteJanuary 12, 2012
This intriguing blend shows plenty of individuality: leathery, slightly horsey aromas and dark berry and earth flavors. Hints of sour herbs and lemon on the finish give it enough bite to serve alongside burgers and the like. No need for additional age; drink it now.

Expert NoteJanuary 12, 2012
The insubstantial nose of this wine is spotted with dried herbs, baking spices and a whiff of pickle jar. The palate is thin, the tannins are sheer, but the flavors are of sweet, fresh red plum and cinnamon.

Expert NoteJanuary 12, 2012
This basic Bordeaux blend's solid, dry cherry fruit and herb-chalk accents are focused and attractive, if not very deep. The dry, slightly tart profile will compliment many foods and make for good sipping, as well. A good value red.

Expert NoteJanuary 12, 2012
Simple, yet with plenty of straightforward appeal, this attractive wine is a credible light red (read Beaujolais-style) alternative. Ample strawberry-raspberry aromas and flavors prevail, while a smooth feel and clean finish complete this modest yet attractive offering.

Chenin, South Africa’s most widely planted grape, plays its role once again, this time in the lead with 48% Chardonnay supporting. Citrus on the nose, with strong vanilla accents, is followed by racy tropical fruits in the mouth giving life to the smooth, demure feel. Finishes with a bang, leaving grapefruit, papaya, vanilla, spice and a craving for another sip.

This self-proclaimed “lifestyle brand” from giant South African wine company KWV boasts the usual trappings: brightly colored label, flanged top. What’s unusual is that the wine in the bottle is pretty good. Cherry, leather and chocolate notes provide a modicum of complexity, while the finish is soft and clean. A solid choice to accompany burgers on the patio. Imported by 57 Main Street Wine Co.

Expert NoteJanuary 12, 2012
A light, simple red with less substance than expected considering the grapes and the brand's usual good hand with value wines. Some grapey and tart red berry flavors here wear smoke and toast accents. Lean, with a short, earthy dry finish.

Expert NoteJanuary 12, 2012
A good basic white blend offering apple hay and mild tropical fruit aromas and flavors. The feel is smooth and easy, the palate a touch sweet, but the wine closes neatly—crisper and drier than expected, nice to find in this price range.

Chenin Blanc, aka Steen, has for years been South Africa’s workaday white. Paired here with Chardonnay, it shows a nice green-apple and floral bouquet, similar brisk flavors and finishes with a lemony tang. It’s a good white wine quaff that’s not overly soft or sweet.
