This is a "moment of silence wine." It's one to respect, to let breathe, to talk about and to love life over. It is exactly why I do what I do. It's a medium ruby color with a light brick rim, typical of Burgundian Pinot. Aromas are fabulous: warmly spiced cherry, red licorice, just-tilled earth, sage and herbs, dust, mushroom and nutmeg. Flavors are of ripe red-black cherry, mega concentrated strawberry, then subtle baking spice and herbs. The mushroom quality comes through very subtley as well. A Grand Cru or this same wine with more age would have a more nuanced palate, surely, but I wouldn't enjoy it more than this one, right now. It's an ideal wine. My favorite thing about it? The oak is so deftly integrated it doesn't even show up in my notes, nor can I exactly pick it out on the nose or the palate. Such a welcome departure. Merci, M Groffier, for pure joy in a glass.
