Expert NoteJanuary 12, 2012
Light, spicy and well made, with pale fruit flavors of strawberry, cranberry and raspberry. Tannins remain stiff and peppery; the fruit does not seem to have the ripeness to fill out the middle, even with more bottle time.

Expert NoteJanuary 12, 2012
This is sleek and stylish, with polished and bright raspberry and cherry candy flavors, spiced up with sharp acids and finished with some chewy tannins. The wine is just this side of high-toned, bright and assertive, and the fruit flavors are penetrating and last through a considerable finish.

Expert NoteJanuary 12, 2012
McKinley Springs vineyard has provided the grapes, and Joe Gunselman has crafted a spicy, forward and aromatic Syrah, co-fermenting it with 5% Viognier. The light fruit flavors of raspberry and pie cherry—remain clear and fresh through the mid-palate, but fail to add to that slender strength in the finish. In fact, the wine turns a bit chalky, and feels prematurely dried out, without the complexity that made the glorious 2005 so memorable.

Expert NoteJanuary 12, 2012
Fragrant, smoky, oaky and seductive, this toasty wine is immediately appealing, and has been given the all-star treatment. The young vineyard offers promising fruit; its flavors light and clean, tasting of raspberries and pie cherries. Lots of oak gives it a very chocolaty finish.

Expert NoteJanuary 12, 2012
Dense, deep and angular, this young Cabernet is a lot of wine, loaded with bright berry flavors mixing raspberry, strawberry and boysenberry. With great concentration and palate presence, this youthful wine shows grip and texture, as light pepper and spice flavors filter in, and the tannins add definition and power to the finish, which slowly opens into a light dusting of chocolate.

Expert NoteJanuary 12, 2012
This Bordeaux blend is a complex and sappy red with plenty of raspberry, cherry and cassis fruit flavor, tangy acids and ripe tannins. Young and tart, it is structured for age, compact and quite young. The oak brings in hints of butter and caramel.

Expert NoteJanuary 12, 2012
The term Claret is used properly here, to represent a classic Bordeaux blend, in this instance including all five grapes in generous proportions. It’s a sensational value, with the depth, detail and precision of a much more expensive wine. Spicy red fruits, wisps of herb and black olive, a hint of earth and tar, all tease and tantalize, without overpowering the wine’s innate finesse.

Expert NoteJanuary 12, 2012
A balanced, supple young blended red, it includes all five Bordeaux varietals in the blend. The vineyards read like a list of who’s who in Washington viticulture — Ciel du Cheval, DuBrul, Pepper Bridge and more. Pretty berries and cherries set the fruit, and the wine has a classy, confident style all through the finish.

Expert NoteJanuary 12, 2012
Dr. Joe Gunselman’s wines consistently show polish and verve, and this is always the best of them. There are streaks of every conceivable red fruit, a layer of chocolate, a whiff of coffee, a lick of butterscotch and plenty of vivid acids. The wine is sleek and yet powerful, and the flavors suggest layering which in turn suggests complexity and a long life ahead.

Expert NoteJanuary 12, 2012
Supple and juicy, this young, purple, berry-loaded Cab includes small amounts of the other four Bordeaux grapes in the blend. It’s a masterful blending achievement, with each grape seeming to contribute something to the nose, the mouthfeel, the length and the overall focus. Flavors are tightly woven—purple fruits, butterscotch, mocha, moist earth and baking spices—but nothing is overwrought. This will need considerable breathing time to unwrap, and years in the bottle to soften some of the hard edges.
