Starts off a bit herbal and stemmy-smelling, with bright red berry aromas, but turns creamy and soft in the mouth, caressing the palate with ripe red berries and vanilla. Easy to drink.

An interesting wine. It comes from a southerly part of Napa Valley many consider too cool for fine Cab. But this was a warm vintage. The result is very ripe fruit, wrapped in robust, hard tannins that make the wine too young to drink now. The blackberry, currant, cherry and new oak flavors are delicious, but this Cab needs at least through 2008 to come into its own, and will be better after 2010.

Lots of alcohol as well as a syrupy, sweet red that is so rich and unctuous that it’s tough to sip. For the prune flavor and outright size it’s almost worth taking a look. But beware.

Smooth tannins on this Syrah. They’re soft and rich and complex, and the fruit is superripe, suggesting blackberry and cherry pie filling. But the wine tastes sugary sweet, and doesn’t seem likely to age.

A bit leaner and more herbal than many of its Napa cousins, the ’06 Rocca nonetheless is an elegantly constructed wine, reminiscent of a good, minor Bordeaux. The blackberry fruit combines with oak to provide richness and texture.

Tastes jammy and tart in blackberries, and very tannic. The combination of sharp fruitiness and astringency is not pleasant now, leading to the question of ageability. Doesn’t seem likely, so drink soon.

What’s so nice about this Cab is its balance and delicacy, without the heaviness that can mar a more alcoholic wine. It shows polished flavors of cherries, blackberries, cola and cedar, with a long, fine finish of cassis liqueur. Really an elegant sipper, this wine is best now and for a couple years.

Quite firm and tannic in its youth, but shows promise in the overall balance, and the core of rich, ripe cherry and blackberry fruit. There’s a meaty, leathery edge that meshes well with oak on the finish. Should develop through 2008.

A Cab-based Bordeaux blend with a little Syrah, this wine tastes surprisingly cooked for such a cool vintage. There’s a raisiny, smoky, baked blackberry and cherry flavor that makes for an imbalance that won’t age away.

After a string of successful vintages, this wine has an oven-baked fruit taste, like blackberry and cherry pie-filling that burbled out from the crust and got caramelized.
