Expert NoteJanuary 12, 2012
This is Rockblock’s big production Syrah, at 1,100 cases, and it’s a beauty, boasting understated oak and ripe blackberry and plum flavors. As you might expect from a Pinot Noir maker (Rockblock is Domaine Serene’s Rhône brand), the texture is silky and delicate.

Expert NoteJanuary 12, 2012
One of several microproduction wines (50 cases of this bottling) from Rockblock, the Carpenter Hill Syrah offers up a lovely combination of dried spices and fresh blackberries couched in a silky texture. Velvety and extremely supple on the finish, giving a great sense of elegance.

Expert NoteJanuary 12, 2012
Rockblock is a new brand launched by Domaine Serene to showcase Syrah. Full, lush, satiny fruit explodes across the palate, wrapped in stiff, smoky, but well-managed tannins.

Expert NoteJanuary 12, 2012
Veers solidly away from most New World Syrahs in its tart berry flavors and lean texture, focusing on meat, smoke, tobacco and pepper. Very complex, with charms that should unfurl gracefully over the next few years.

Expert NoteJanuary 12, 2012
Ripe to near the point of overripeness, according to our tasters, with dark plum aromas and flavors that turn chocolaty. Tannins are supremely soft and creamy smooth, while the finish lingers delicately.

Expert NoteJanuary 12, 2012
Though technically in Oregon, this well-known vineyard is most closely associated with the many Walla Walla (Washington) wineries that purchase its fruit. This is great juice, ripe and vibrant, with pretty, luscious blackberry and black cherry fruit, sweetly wrapped in cinnamon-spiced oak.
