An excellent wine, with smooth, chalky tannins in the mouth followed by a long finish. Resin and lanolin aromas come through on the nose; flavors on the palate are more of the white-peach kind. Just lovely.

A GSM with fireplace, foresty, wheaty aromas that echo on the palate, where the prime flavors are pine, earth and red plum. A terrific wine, this wine shows the best of what Grenache can do.

A beautiful wine whose plum fruit is juicy and pure. Crème brûlée rounds the fruit out on the palate, and lingers on the nose, where there’s also some cocoa. Balanced, restrained and well behaved, with the capacity to make some noise. Absolutely drinkable now, but one of those wines that you’ll just be sad to see go.

A hard-to-find wine outside of Rockford’s mailing list and tasting room (only about 600 cases produced, and they go quickly), but certainly the standard-bearer as far as sparkling Shiraz goes. The average age of Rockford’s nonvintage sparkling is 7 years; though it has 23 grams of residual sugar, it tastes just as I’d always envisioned a good sparking Shiraz would: like the still wine, but cold and with bubbles. Plums and juicy berries on the palate, with grape and violet aromas on the nose. Good luck finding it, but certainly grab it if you do.

Despite a challenging year in the Barossa, especially for Cabernet, this is a charming, medium-bodied wine that should drink well for the next 8 years or so. Aromas are slightly leafy and herbal, but also feature plenty of red currant fruit, while the tannins are well-ripened but still show typical Cab structure. Long on the finish.

This superb wine features elements of cola, smoke and earth, but rising above all is the wonderfully pure raspberry fruit. Delicate in texture, with a long, silky finish, this is almost Burgundian in style, not a huge blockbuster, but a model of elegance and finesse. Drinks well now, but as a recent taste of the ’96 showed, these are wines that can age 10 years past the vintage with ease.

Sweet red berry and plum aromas on the nose are forward and ripe. On the palate, it's a medium-sized wine with fine tannins and an attractive, chocolate-and-mocha finish.

Meant to be served chilled and young, this peppy red has vibrant berry-basket aromas and flavors. It's a fresh, happy wine, very juicy with pure fruit. Goes well with crabcakes, and probably just as well with fiery curries.

Rockford Alicante Bouschet - 2004

Perfume on the nose is beautiful, like light jasmine or honeysuckle. It’s a feminine wine, delicately built, with more floral flavors bolstering white stone fruit on the palate. Finishes long.

A blend of two-thirds Cabernet and a third Shiraz, this is a wine with awesome balance and beautiful, pure plum fruit on the palate. Bouquet shows soft red plum and pine needles.
