Somehow winemaker Rolf Binder manages to combine cool, savory aspects with bold, ripe-fruit flavors. The 2005 Heysen marries cinnamon, clove and peppery spice with blackberries and plums, tying it all together with a robe of vanilla and chocolaty oak and finishing with a hint of espresso. This is a creamy, full-bodied wine whose fruit conceals considerable tannin; drink 2010–2020.

This is 60% Shiraz and 40% Grenache, with the Grenache providing some volume and roundness while the Shiraz provides the more assertive flavor notes. It’s a heady blend of sweet—cola—and savory—black olive and coffee—notes, with a long, supple finish. Drink now–2015.

This is from Barossa, but the bouquet is more like that of a cool-climate Shiraz, packed with pepper and herbs that accent red berries. Flavors are meaty and spice-driven, backed by ample berry fruit and wrapped in a creamy cloak of soft tannins. Nicely complex, especially at the realistic price point. Drink now–2012.

A blend of 55% Shiraz, 30% Mataro and 15% Grenache, the 2005 Heinrich is a hauntingly complex wine, featuring cedar and floral notes on the nose, followed up on the palate by flavors reminiscent of sandalwood, Asian spices and dusty earth, with just enough cherry fruit to pull it all together. Tannins are soft, the finish long and supple. Drink now–2015.

Winemaker Rolf Binder’s tribute to his father is this blend of 45% Shiraz, 35% Grenache and 20% Mataro, a Côtes du Rhône-style offering. For the price, it’s a worthy effort, featuring scents and flavors of blackberry and cherry liqueur, vanilla and a hint of green peppercorn. The texture is creamy-smooth, and the only quibble is the touch of alcoholic warmth that shows through on the finish. Drink now.

Rolf Binder's eponymous wines used to be sold under the Veritas label, but now his name is front and center. This entry-level Shiraz-Grenache offers a great introduction to the Binder style, combining a velvety mouthfeel with elegant notes of spice and earth. There's black and plum fruit, but uncommon complexity for an Australian wine in this price range.
