A bottle of this legendary wine was served from Ron Pohl’s cellar at the Fourth Annual Bordeaux versus Burgundy dinner; incredible nose to open, wafting floral scents, violets and lavender, black cherries, layered and complex but at the same time elegant and exotic, we commented that if there was a way to capture the incredible aromas of this wine in a perfume, we could all be wealthy; very sophisticated flavors; complex but characterized by a softness and sweetness in the front of the mouth; sweet and silky with superb balance; lots of black cherry flavors with various nuances of fruit and earth along the edges; the only negative of this wine is that it has to be drunk soon as tinges of volatile acidity began to emerge after it had sat in the glass for a while; that does not take away any of this wine’s greatness. Very sweet nose with lots of black fruits, but there are many secondary aromas here, most notably rubber and petrol, dry wood; beautifully ripe and sweet in the mouth with a perfumed intensity of flavor that is seductive; there is power here, but it is wrapped in layers of sweetness that can make the wine seem deceptively forward; the truth lies deeper in the wine, after a search of the nooks and crannies of flavor that are lurking about; quite a wonderful finish with black cherry and blackberry flourishes. There may be skeptics out there, but this wine is tough to top; opens with a surge of sweet intense aromas that have black cherries, plums, and assorted fruits, mixing with a tantalizing hint of bacon fat, black pepper and mixed spices, confectioner’s sugar, smoke, deep and complex; laser sharp on the palate; this defines the presence of fruit with such precision that the black cherries are visible each separate from the others; very smooth and rich on the entry; sophisticated and complex; silky with feminine characteristics but no shrinking violet here; long complex finish that stays in the mouth for what seems an eternity; bring it on. The first thing that one notices about a Romanée Conti is that it exudes power and grace; sweet aromas of black cherries are the opening act, followed by elements of black pepper and freshly-turned earth, cassis, and then more of a perfumed and floral definition; very intense in the mouth, the wine provides layers of flavor right from the start; black cherries are the dominant flavor, but there are other flavors in the background that evoke caramel, toffee, and truffles; perfect pitch on this wine; lots of depth; very long finish, with intense flavors right to the fade out after a minute or so.
