Very sweet nose, has the slightly cooked aromas of overripe fruit, but at the same time the wine is jammy and very perfumed, with strong floral tomes, mixing with the more traditional black pepper and spices that these wines show; fresh and ripe in the mouth, nice red cherry flavors; tightly knit and surprisingly fresh and focused; good finish with citrus notes and dry tannins along the edges. This wine, served at the Finkel/Elvin dinner separated the Burgundians from the non-Burgundians; the less initiated were put off by the funky, barnyard defined nose that was as pronounced as any; but then the expected airing out occurred and the nose emerged with its full sweetness and depth of fruit, black cherry and earth mixed with herbs and pepper; sweet and ripe in the mouth with layers of flavor; black cherry and plum flavors mix harmoniously with earth and wooden notes; good amount of fresh citrus; lighter than I remember this wine, but with all of the elegance and poise that these wines can produce in a good year; soft and silky at the finish with “old vine” sweetness; I do sense that it is time to drink this wine as the finish is showing some decay at the edges. (18.5/20) Another bottle served at the Caine Bacchus weekend was consistent, and perhaps even fresher and more appealing, showing more jammy fruit, and wonderful focused intensity.

Very earthen and mushroomy on the first nose, quite advanced, although it also has the wonderful old vine sweetness, somewhat toasted and with a slightly charred aroma; beginning to seriously dry out now, lots of earthen and wooden flavors; there is plenty of sweet fruit left in this wine though, and while not at its peak anymore, the wine has good solid structure and an old-Burgundy flavor that is appealing. Intense and powerful nose with complex and deep aromas, smoked meat, black cherries, green and black pepper, earthen; sweet fruit opens the wine in the mouth, quite aggressive in the mouth, but with balance and poise; black pepper, black cherries; this is loaded with ripe Pinot flavors; very expressive; soft and rich with flavors of cherry compote; powerful long finish. Crude nose characterized with overripe fruit, slightly medicinal, dry leaves, earth tones; plump and sweet in the mouth, very ripe fruit, a touch flabby, lacks underlying structure; finish becomes quite dry as pretty aggressive tannins emerge to subdue the fruit; spicy at the end with a nice spicy undertone; not a top-ranked RSV, but enjoyable. Deep and ripe nose, loaded with black cherry and black fruit aromas, earthen, cedar, spices, fullish; sweet and classic in the mouth, much fresher than I would have assumed; layers of black cherry fruit; wooden tones mix with earth and smoke; some drying tannins, but pretty much in check; long, smooth, ripe finish with plenty of life left in this wine. Very barnyardy nose at the start, then smoothing out to show lots of caramel and mocha, sweet and very perfumed with hints of black pepper, lush and seductive; earthen, perfumed and rich in the mouth, sweet and rich fruit; good concentration; great focus; big dry acidity at the core, but it does not interfere with the flavors in the wine; stays focused to the end and finishes with a flourish.
