The plum and cherry fruit on the palate is pretty bouncy, but is tempered by oak and earth. An interesting meaty-saltiness (like cured meat) shows on the nose and on the finish. This is a very good wine, with tannins that are approachable even now.

Jammy and rich, this dry wine has some hefty tannins, but can be enjoyed now with big foods. It’s simple and direct and tart and straightforward, a clean wine with flavors of blackberries.

Round and creamy in the mouth, with fine tannins, this is a drink-now Cab that is just the right weight to be enjoyed with food. Plum and cherry fruit in the mouth dries out on the finish, with the help of some smooth tannins.

This Hunter wine shows light peach and citrus aromas and flavors. Its feel, though, is crystalline, unyielding and hard to warm up to. Finishes lemony and hard, with a little toasted wood. Tasted twice.

Bright gold in color, this wine’s all about sweet tropical fruit, particularly pineapple and passion fruit. An undercurrent of smokiness on both the nose and the palate adds interest and complexity.

This perennial value leader scores again in the ’98 vintage. It’s definitely fruity, as it delivers the full complement of citrus, especially grapefruit. A touch of wood gives a vanilla/meringue accent. Pleasant, with a nice mouthfeel, this will make far more friends than enemies. Best Buy.
