Unfocused, with sharp fruit that comes across borderline astringent. In terms of flavors, it’s all cherry and citrus, and that’s because the acidity is scorching. A hollow man of a wine; there’s just not that much to like.

A barrel buster, with huge barrique qualities including char, chocolate and vanilla along with ripe black-fruit aromas. Spirited is the best way to describe this masculine, tannic bruiser, which is a blend of old-vines Garnacha and Carignan. Hold a couple of years to let it settle, then enjoy.

Ripe and rich; it pushes the limit toward raisiny but doesn’t cross the boundary. As a result, the sweet bouquet oozes kirsch, licorice and spice. Stays thick on the palate, but not particularly heavy. Flavors of baked black fruit, mocha and espresso impress, with accents of cinnamon and herbs popping through. Complex and out of the ordinary. In no way is this up to the high standards of other Tirants. The 2003 is overly woody and shy on the rich, saturated fruit that it’s supposed to deliver. It’s O.K., but very leafy, dry and tight.

Dark in color, while one sniff indicates ripeness at the edge of stewy. There’s unctuous berry jam and raisin to the bouquet, likely a result of late picking. Chunky on the palate, with plum and blackberry. Grabby yet soft, with wide-spread tannins. Finishes with coconut, vanilla and prune. Imported by De Maison Selections, Inc.

Aromas of raisins, meat and forest floor match the full, fleshy flavors of currant, sweet tobacco and new leather well. Finishes with juicy acidity that holds up to the tannins. This is a big, lush, well-balanced wine that should drink well until at least 2010.

A huge, intense wine that still delivers complexity, it’s made from 100-year-old Garnacha and Cariñena vines, finished off with small amounts of Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot and Syrah. The evolving aromas of licorice, black cherry, toast and lavender lead into big, dark fruit flavors with tannins and acids to match. Drink now–2015.

A touch gamy at first, this wine offers a complex package of curry, sweet spices, black fruit, pepper and golden raisins. In the mouth, it is smooth, svelte and closes with an elegant yet big finish. Drink now–2008.
