Neither reedy nor weedy, but a little bit of field and nettle does enter the otherwise red-fruit dominated bouquet. In the mouth, there’s pie cherry and raspberry along with a hint of green herbs, while the finish is moderately long and clean. Nothing spectacular but very satisfying given the cool, rainy conditions that plagued 2002.

This young RdD was aged only five months in barrel, yet it has weight, softness and vanilla shadings as well as pure, unadulterated dark fruit. In a word, it’s delicious; the round blackberry and cherry flavors are great and the chocolate and smoke that sneak up on the finish seal the deal. A bit too expensive to be a Best Buy, but still a very good deal. Imported by Haro Imports.

What starts as smoke and bacon quickly veers to heavy wood, rubber, vanilla and coconut. Flavors of raspberry and strawberry are secure, while the texture is grabby and sharp. Shows good intensity.

Expert NoteJanuary 12, 2012
Seductively rich, with blackberry and vanilla aromas. Ripe and chewy, with plum, vanilla and subtle spice in the background. Nice doses of licorice and bitter chocolate solidify the finish. Quite meaty and modern, if a bit pricy for a youngster from a hot year. Imported by Haro Imports.

Baseball card bubble gum and leafy spearmint aromas shade dark, dusty fruit notes, while the tannic palate houses mildly tart cherry flavors followed by hints of sucking candy and finally coffee. Decent but a bit overoaked and out of sorts.

Rubiejo makes one of the best, most consistent jovens in all of Spain, let alone Ribera del Duero. The 2006 is typically deep and earthy, with five months worth of hickory and leather poking through. The flavors run toward blackberry and chocolate, while some vanilla comes in late. Chewy and big, with mass appeal.

Talk about a colorful, bold, jammy red! It’s heavily extracted and, as the label notes, young as can be. The fruit is heavy, dark to the point of teeth-staining, and tannic. Not sophisticated or meant for fine dining, but full of fruit and life. Tastes good but is unequivocally rambunctious.

Expert NoteJanuary 12, 2012
Wines like this are good indicators that 2004 is indeed an exceptional vintage in RdD. For a Tempranillo that spent only five months in oak it’s fairly settled. The nose is a touch syrupy but you can only love the concentrated berry aromas. The mouth is bulky but satisfying, with huge dark-fruit flavors and balancing tannins and acidity. Jumpy but very likable.

Dark cherry is the lead aroma, and behind that there’s a supporting wave of vanilla and dill. The palate is snappy for a reserve, with clean raspberry and cherry flavors. While we wouldn’t call it “lean,” the wine isn’t superrich or extracted. So enjoy it now for its medium weight, admirable purity and true Ribera character.

Rubiejo seems to have a way with young, spunky, simple wines. Their Jovenes of the past few years have been fruity and broad, but also balanced and down to earth. This grapy youngster shows floral, fleshy aromas backed by black fruit flavors that are likable but impossible to distinguish. It’s big but weightless, meaning it’s like a pastry with lots of calories that isn’t that filling.
