Forward and lively but challenged and pithy. The apricot and melon flavors are bolstered by acidity, but the wine tastes more citric and snappy than suave. And the finish also doesn’t offer much beyond citrus. Definitely not lifeless but where’s the Chardonnay character?

Slightly closed and murky at first, but with airing it comes to life. The palate is tight and lively due to full acidity, but it gives structure and purpose to the wine’s berry and pepper flavors. A little fiery but also endowed with length. Contains 13% Cabernet Sauvignon and Tempranillo.

Quintessential Best Buy stuff, with full aromas of meaty berry and leather. Concentrated and dark across the palate, with full-bodied black fruit, black olive and savory flavors. Offers all the color, weight and fruit that a $12 wine should.

Meaty, dense and rich aromas, with driving scents of prune, licorice, blackberry and cola. The palate is healthy and rich, and it keeps in step with flavors of blackberry, dark plum and savory spice. Finishes lightly roasted and dark, with a saucy aftertaste that separates it from the masses. A lusty Malbec to drink now.

A more than solid wine cut from the tropical, South American blueprint. It’s open and full of banana, pear and apple aromas, and while it runs hot and fast on the palate, it’s got lots of woody, ripe flavors of apple and pithy citrus. Round, lively and packed with flavor even if it shows almost nothing in common with cool-climate Chardonnay.

Fruity and earthy, with sly, narrow flavors of blackberry and chocolate. This has the ripeness and power that one would expect from a high-end Malbec, but also a bit more finesse and natural “redness” than many heavyweights from Argentina. Hints of herbs, pine, lemon peel and mocha grace the structured finish.

Forward in style, with lightly toasty, creamy aromas that accent baseline apple and tropical fruit scents. The palate cruises at a good pace, with citrusy apple, lemon and green pear flavors. Long, lingering and a little loud on the finish, with more than ample power and zest.

Rather jammy, murky and generic on the nose, with black-fruit aromas that center around plum and blackberry. The palate is edgy but fresh, with snappy, tarry black-fruit flavors. Feels rugged, rough and tannic but gets the job done in its price range.

Sweet, forward aromas of mocha, blackberry, cotton candy and vanilla signal a rich wine. The palate is round and chunky, with a spot of elegance but more size and force. Flavors of chunky blackberry are slightly salty and salinic at the edges, while overall it’s thick, fruity and black in nature. Drink now through 2012.

Compact on the bouquet, with a pointed combo of boysenberry and blackberry aromas. The palate is full, with plenty of acidity and stuffing. Flavors of blackberry, olive, fig and chocolate are likable and the finish is loud and powerful in typical South American style. Better value than the higher-priced Kinien Cab. Drink now through 2012.
