Expert NoteJanuary 12, 2012
That ever-present Tuscan sun has done its part to ripen a beautifully intense and complex Pinot Noir. There’s depth and dimension here with balsam notes, licorice, rhubarb preserves and black tar behind notes of dried currant berry.

Expert NoteJanuary 12, 2012
Heavy, with some burnt aromas. Stewy on the palate, with deep plum and blackberry accented by a firm dose of cedary oak. To call it syrupy would not be an exaggeration. Not stellar for a wine with a reputation.

Expert NoteJanuary 12, 2012
Musclebound with an earthy, spicy character to the nose. The body is fleshy but pure, offering black cherry flavors accented by tar and licorice. It finishes smooth, with just the right touch of vanilla oak. It’s a polished Brunello, good for near-term drinking, but also a candidate for the cellar.

Expert NoteJanuary 12, 2012
This is a nicely shaped Chianti Classico with pretty renderings of cherry fruit, spice, tobacco and dried herbs. The mouthfeel is short but lively and the wine offers medium structure and persistence on the finish. It’s a great, informal food wine.

Expert NoteJanuary 12, 2012
From Ruffino, this Brunello is ripe yet earthy, with a touch of forest and moss to the nose. It may be softer and riper than many, but it’s definitely balanced. Meanwhile, fine black cherry and plum fruit steals the palate, which also dishes hints of chocolate and fennel. Good tannins and grip ensure its longevity.

Expert NoteJanuary 12, 2012
There’s a very plush and velvety quality to this wine that is enhanced by aromas of red berry, pipe tobacco, natural rubber and exotic spice. The wine has a ripe, fruit-forward personality and a smooth, velvety finish that is broad, powerful and long lasting. Large percentages of Merlot and Cabernet Sauvignon back the Sangiovese.

Expert NoteJanuary 12, 2012
Light and fresh, this wine hints at pear and apple; anise and almond on the nose, then turns citrusy on the palate. It’s modest in intensity, but clean and refreshing on the finish.

Expert NoteJanuary 12, 2012
The price has come down on Ruffino’s Lumina this year, and this is great news for consumers. This expression of Pinot Grigio pushes all the usual buttons: the wine is compact, luminous and redolent of citrus, pear and peach.

Ruffino Pinot Grigio - 2009

Expert NoteJanuary 12, 2012
The light cherry aromas and flavors with herb accents show a slight candied quality. Decent structure, but overall the wine is a bit narrow and closes with sharp, quite tart cherry fruit. It’s youthful, for sure, and perhaps will even out with six to nine months in the bottle.

Expert NoteJanuary 12, 2012
Dark berry, cherry and herb aromas blossom into full flavors and pick up handsome tar and licorice accents on the palate. Full but smooth on the finish, it doesn’t settle for superficial appeal, but has substance, good structure and it will age nicely.
