Expert NoteJanuary 12, 2012
An extraordinarily intense style of Viognier, whose flavors cut deep. The sharp, edgy, focused core of lime and citrus fruits seem to last forever, supported by laser-like acids and a tongue-cleaning minerality. There is nothing bitter or hot in the finish; it’s just a super-dense and beautifully varietal Viognier from one of Washington’s best white wine producers.

Expert NoteJanuary 12, 2012
Rulo’s affordable white blend is 90% Sauvignon Blanc, 5% Viognier and 5% Chardonnay. It’s a focused, intense wine; the fruit a gorgeous mix of citrus, rock, fresh herb and a little pepper. The flavors seem etched in stone; they cut through with beautiful natural acids. This is a style that is almost impossible to find in the U.S.—very European, but with a clean, expressive, fruit-driven core.

This 100% Syrah rosé is quite dark, a gorgeous late sunset color. Not a saignée, this is made by macerating the grapes overnight before pressing. Tight, tart, tannic and dense; it’s got unusual tannins for a rosé. Cherry, plum and herb are all there in abundance, with great natural acid, length and concentration.

Expert NoteJanuary 12, 2012
Young, peppery, tight, supple and extremely concentrated, this 100% Syrah has all the varietal character you want; with tightly wound raspberry and currant-based red fruit flavors. In the mouth it extends into stone, more mixed fruits, butterscotch and a tight, earthy, bone- dry tannic finish. It’s a riot of subtle flavors.

Rulo Red Blend - 2005

Expert NoteJanuary 12, 2012
This 70% Syrah, 30% Cabernet Sauvignon blend is tight, spicy, peppery and sharp. Though probably not a wine for cellaring, despite its slightly green fruit, it has density, flavor and depth. As it breathes and smoothes out, black currant and blackberry fruit flavors begin to poke through, and a streak of licorice does also.

Expert NoteJanuary 12, 2012
Spicy, minty and sharp, this has a Sancerre-like edge, but with an extra weight to the fruit that is more reminiscent of like a South African Sauvignon Blanc. It’s packed with green pea, herb, lemon and lots of citrusy flavors, all set against very sharp, bright but delicious natural acids.

Rulo’s Stainless Cuvée Chardonnay stands in stark contrast to the barrel-fermented bottling. Even without the help from new oak, it’s got a ton of character and flavor intensity, with brilliant, crisp apple fruit. The acids are natural and bright, and the fruit is incredibly pure and intense.

Expert NoteJanuary 12, 2012
This young Chardonnay is all barrel fermented and has gone completely through malolactic fermentation. It’s showing plenty of new oak flavor and a slight bitterness, but the crisp and refreshing acids cut through and give the wine focus and length. The excellent fruit mixes semi-tropical, pineapple and fresh green apple.

Expert NoteJanuary 12, 2012
Showing a zesty mix of lime, citrus rind and rock in the mouth, it’s dense and still a bit hard, but deep. A rich, textural, serious Viognier, there’s plenty of fruit and depth for near-term drinking, but it gives the definite impression that it needs more bottle age to fully blossom.

Expert NoteJanuary 12, 2012
Fragrant and lush with floral/citrus aromas, this stainless-fermented Chardonnay is inviting and seductive. Brilliant, bright fruit anchors a wine that is tense and dense and vividly thrilling. The acids are natural and flavors seamlessly run from lemon/lime to pineapple to orange, and keep on keeping on, with fresh, water-washed rock in the finish.
