Expert NoteJanuary 12, 2012
This is a traditional, terroir-driven Merlot, heavy on the dark berry and mocha and with smooth, balanced tannins. Soft, warming spices are intertwined throughout, and the finish dry. There’s structure and tannin here, but the wine is approachable. Imported by Terlato Wines International.

The earthy, stably aromas that are so characteristic of South African Shiraz also leave their marks on this one. The bouquet is mostly leather and “tree-leafy;” tobacco and tree bark overlay tart red berries in the mouth. A medium-length finish offers sour leather and black- tea notes. Unusual and not for everyone, but worth exploring.

Expert NoteJanuary 12, 2012
This is one of South Africa’s great Cabernets, a particular success in a difficult vintage. It has all the richness and power, but it combines that with elegance and structure. The tannins are dry, promising good aging, while the acidity comes from ripe black currant and black plum fruits. Age for another five years at least.

Expert NoteJanuary 12, 2012
This is a wine with presence, from its meaty, spicy nose to its big, full-flavored fruit and spice character. Many layers of spice, smoke and berry unfold on the palate and the overall impression is delicious and serious. It lacks a touch of refinement, but is still a very good, ageable selection.

Expert NoteJanuary 12, 2012
Muscular spice, deep red berry and blackberry and sturdy tannins give this strength and elegance. The fruit is assertive and delicious, the mouthfeel fresh and the finish lingering. Could use a few years of aging for extra character, but today, a robust and stylish choice.

Firm tannins and good acidity suggest you can enjoy this wine over the next 10 years, but with beefy flavors of cassis, blackberry and tobacco you may not want to wait. Meaty on the nose, with ample oak spice and a touch of pepper adding to powerful fruit aromas, and a long, spicy finish.

Fragrant notes of spiced plum, cherry and milk chocolate are met with toast and herbs on the palate. The acidity is a façade to smooth, sheer tannins and the finish is layered in oak and cocoa.

Dark and inky in color, this blend of Cab, Shiraz and Merlot comes from respected Stellenbosch producer Rust en Vrede. There’s an earthy nose of leather and spice that gives way to berries and crisp herbs. On the palate, the wine is balanced and structured, with a toasty nut finish.

Expert NoteJanuary 12, 2012
This spicy red from Ruse en Vrede offers a nose of mocha and red berry, and flavors of cherry, pepper and tobacco. Tannic and big, the wine will benefit from aging or pair well with equally hearty dishes like grilled ribs, steak or venison.

Expert NoteJanuary 12, 2012
Odd aromas and indistinct, sour fruit are loosely knit together in this wine. A spine of dry herbs and sour cherry are accented by paraffin, cedar and vaccum powder on the nose and palate.
