Raimond Prüm’s 2004 Essence is better than his successful 2003. It’s a big, forceful mouthful of Riesling, filled with ripe apple and pear flavors that ends on a harmonious off-dry note of citrus. Imported by Palm Bay Imports.

On the dry side for a kabinett, with the alcohol weighing in at 11%. Yet even though the alcohol is relatively high, the wine gives an impression of lightness, balancing melon and white peach flavors with touches of spice and minerality. Drink now–2012.

Raimund Prüm’s Blue Slate is developing into a consistent performer, marrying hints of ripe fruit—peach or nectarine and melon—with crisp citrusy notes and an underlying minerality that gives it an almost dry finish. Drink now.

Despite this wine’s remarkable sweetness and viscosity, it never seems unbalanced or heavy. Aromas of ripe apples, pears and melons give way to waves of tropical fruit flavors on the palate, buoyed by dried apricots and cinnamon. Finishes long, echoing of golden raisins and apricot.

Powerful aromas of dried apricots signal concentrated botrytis, but there is more complexity as well: honey, peach and bergamot flavors are all layered artfully over a deep foundation of apricot preserves. And yet the wine, intensely sweet, isn’t at all cloying. Amazing, but probably impossible to find: 8 cases made.

Light and fresh, this is a friendly fruitball of a Riesling. Riper peach and melon notes accent green apples and limes, then end on a crisp, refreshing note. A solid choice for the picnic hamper. Imported by Palm Bay Imports.

Viscous, almost oily in texture, this is several vintages older than most of the recent samples, yet seems so unevolved that it’s not out of place. Honey and dried spices are the predominant themes, with citrusy fruit making up the core. Should evolve glacially through at least 2025.

Sweet and bracingly tart at the same time, with racy acidity framing sweet orange and lime flavors. Flourishes of bergamot and cinnamon add complexity on the nose and reprise on the long finish.

A lovely effort from proprietor Raimund Prüm, this plump, creamy-textured spätlese displays ample minerality—there’s a distinctly slate-driven note—allied to ripe apple, stone fruit and citrus. Sweet but not overwhelmingly so, this would be terrific with slightly sweet or spicy dishes.

Makes an interesting contrast with the J.J. Prüm bottling from the same site, weighing in at a full 1.5% less in finished alcohol, and showing mineral-inflected passion fruit flavors and a touch of vanilla. The sweetness is finely balanced by mouthwatering acidity on the finish.
