A seriously good wine, and it’s hard to believe they’re practically giving it away. With its depth of blackcurrant, herb and coffee flavors that are long and deep, its rich tannins and near perfect balance, it’s impressive from start to finish. A very great value from Chalone Wine Group.

This Chalone-owned property was purchased in 1999, and this represents the first serious red wine made under the new administration. Bright and herbal, it has cherry fruit nuanced with tobacco leaf and brightened with crisp acids. Clean and lively, and attractively priced.

Very dry and tart in acids, a steely wine that cleanses the palate with citrus, almondskin and white pepper flavors.

A very pretty wine, smooth and supple, with more finesse than ever before. It displays clean plum and strawberry fruit flavors and well-managed tannins. A light touch with the American oak gives it a bit of extra flavor.

The second release of this vineyard designate. This is several steps up from the generic reds that characterize the lineup. It’s got more focus and stuffing, more density and texture, than anything else. There’s an interesting mushroom component. The fruit is tight and tart, and the acids a bit flush. This is not a particularly elegant wine, but it hangs in there with extended flavors, finishing with toasted almonds.

The fruit is juicy, very tart, leaning toward cranberry and pomegranate, maybe some pie cherry too. Tasty, snappy wine, young and acidic, refreshing and clean. Good potential.

This remains one of the better Washington Merlots for lovers of ripe berry and cherry fruits, slathered with a liberal amount of chocolaty oak. Flavors are nicely integrated, with hints of bacon, smoke and ham. A friendly, tasty bottle of wine.

Price rise. With broad flavors of berry and chocolate, this is pleasant and undistinguished. This does not have the weight or varietal presence of the winery’s Merlot.

The fleshy, fruity nose suggests very ripe, mixed berry and cherry fruits, and there is a liberal amount of oak. A good, open, broadly fruity mouthfeel knits the wine together nicely. In fact, its flavors seem woven throughout, mixing the fruit with notes of oak, bacon, smoke and ham. Surprisingly long.

This is a really nice Cabernet. It’s very oaky, but the acidy structure and sappy, fresh young blackberry fruit provide more than enough counterpoint to all that sweet wood. The tannins are just beautiful. An incredible value in New World Cabernet.
