Expert NoteJanuary 12, 2012
More oaky and resiny than in prior years, with a strong, undeniable scent of sawdust. This suggests faux-oak aging via tank staves, which results in a textured but resiny wine that lacks fresh fruit. Too much like a tour through the sawmill.

A quick first nosing suggests a vegetal quality, and yes, the wine does have a green streak to it. But overall it rounds out and opens to show herbal black-fruit flavors, tobacco, coffee and earth notes. It’s tannic and clacky, maybe a touch aggressive, but it does improve with airing. Good Chilean Cab with typical Maipo herbal notes.

Expert NoteJanuary 12, 2012
High priced for Carmenère, especially one of this marginal quality. The nose is all olives and herbal essence, while the palate shows a coating of cinnamon oak on top of midland red cherry and raspberry flavors. Not that impressive given that it’s a reserve-level effort.

Expert NoteJanuary 12, 2012
Fresh pear and a touch of oak grace the nose, followed by a crisp, generally well-balanced palate that’s toting punchy white-fruit flavors and noticeable oak. A very nice Chilean Chardonnay with snap.

Expert NoteJanuary 12, 2012
Straddles the line between varietal and vegetal, but with aromas of canned beans, asparagus and bell pepper this is too vegetal to rate better. The palate seems underdeveloped and raw, with pole bean, lime and grassy flavors. Tangy and fresh, but not cutting it in the aroma and flavor departments.

Expert NoteJanuary 12, 2012
Spicy, herbal and toasty on the nose, but the palate fails to meet the promise of the aromas. It’s acidic and sharp at its center, with grabby tannins along with regular plum and boysenberry flavors. A big-bodied red with rough tannins and outsized acidity.

Expert NoteJanuary 12, 2012
Nettle, citrus, green herb and mineral aromas announce its coastal SB roots, while the juicy citrus and stony mineral quality are just what they should be. There’s even some tarragon and juniper in the mix. Really good Chilean Sauvignon Blanc that is improving year after year since debuting in 2007. 1,000 cases made.

Expert NoteJanuary 12, 2012
This meaty, earthy Cab hails from a special vineyard near San Pedro’s Curicó winery. It receives 18 months in oak, 50% of it new. Blueberry and blackberry flavors are dominant but are somewhat held back by heavy tannins. The structure is solid, maybe too much so. Additional aging could soften it up, but that’s not a guarantee.

Expert NoteJanuary 12, 2012
Dark in color, smoky and full of coconut and mocha aromas. However, the palate is more acidic, tight and starching than ideal. Add in peppery, herbal flavors to the black cherry, oak and high acidity and it gives off a tight, crisp personality.

Expert NoteJanuary 12, 2012
Lots of tobacco, green bean and berry fruit work the nose, followed by syrupy but standard red-fruit flavors on the tongue. Plum, fudge and astringent tannins make for a mouthfeel that’s at once soft but also hard.
