Simple red-fruit aromas are o.k. but fail to register above that. The palate is tasty enough, with sweet plum and blackberry flavors. Creamy on the finish, yet a bit candied and cloying. Improves with airing. Imported by Portet Wine Selections.

San Polo’s Rosso di Montalcino offers classic aromas of cherry, black fruit and spice. But it also adds an extra layer of vanilla and sweet spice that makes for a very nice ensemble. It’s smooth, rich and spicy on the close.

Expert NoteJanuary 12, 2012
Rubber, mushroom and smoke rise up on the hot, molten nose, while the palate is hard, tough to penetrate and narrow, with dark berry and piercing pepper accents. Tough to dig into and find higher qualities. Thus it comes across as a surface wine without much depth or elegance.

Standard jammy fruit sets the stage for moderate black cherry and plum flavors. Seems hard on the palate, with jagged tannins that will drill away if left unwashed. Fairly flavorful, but lacking in charm.

Expert NoteJanuary 12, 2012
A difficult wine to assess. For starters, it’s heavily oaked and very dark in aromas; think tar, char and espresso. The palate is narrowly focused and tannic, with dark fruit peeking thru here and there. Finishes sheer, with coffee and bitter chocolate. Could get better with time, or it might never really open up. Needs at least another year in bottle to show its true colors.

Wow, what a beautiful wine and what an attractively low price. Rubio offers excellent value with deeply fruity tones of cherry, blackberry and cassis. Spice, leather and tobacco fill in the back and the wine is smooth, generous and silky.

Expert NoteJanuary 12, 2012
Dark as night, with shiny edges to the violet luster. Pretty, floral and fairly deep on the nose, with caramel and chocolate. This is a forward, power-packed red with extract and intensity of flavor. Aggressive but with a full tank that should allow it to go the distance.

Expert NoteJanuary 12, 2012
San Polo has shown very impressive work lately and this velvety rich Brunello pushes its ambitions even further. The bouquet offers a long succession of beautiful aromas including black cherry, vanilla, carob, cola, cinnamon spice and black licorice. There’s also a drying mineral note that adds a dusty touch of elegance and sophistication.

Here’s a Brunello from the four-star 2005 vintage with a thick, almost creamy bouquet of ripe fruit, smooth cinnamon or clove, and warm tones of used leather and earth. There’s a fresh acidic component as well with a bright berry finish.

Ripe fruit and oak nuances emerge from the nose of this modern Brunello Riserva. Aromas include black cherry, blackberry preserves, spice and smoke. Bright fruit flavors and smooth tannins characterize the mouthfeel.
