This vintage of San Rustico’s Amarone seems more closed and reserved compared to last year. You’ll get broad spice aromas and ripe cherry fruit, but the estate’s characteristic intensity is less evident. It’s an easy and genuine wine overall that will pair with lamb or pork.

Recioto is a dark red dessert wine from northeast Italy that pairs with chocolate-based treats and spice cake. Indeed, aromas include clove, cinnamon, prune, blackberry pie and sweet pipe tobacco. The wine’s natural sweetness is backed by structure and fine tannins.

Founded in 1870, San Rustico has recently done a lot of work in the winery and vineyard to maintain a quality edge. This Amarone boasts great intensity and delicacy of aromas. You’ll get layers of apple, cherry cola, mint, blue flowers, licorice, raisin and almond. In the mouth, those flavors are lively and fresh and the mouthfeel is caressing and long-lasting.

There’s a fun, chunky, slightly hefty quality to this wine, accented by blocky aromas of coffee, vanilla, poached cherries, cola, roasted chestnut and brown sugar. If you’re an Amarone purist, you might find these qualities muddled and lacking in grace. But if you love big, meaty wines that you can sink your teeth into, it’s for you. The mouthfeel is chewy, sticky and long lasting.

San Rustico is a steady, quality-minded producer from Valpolicella and their newest Ripasso offers a very nice blend of chocolate, spice and red cherry aromas. In the mouth, the wine is rich and smooth with various points of fruity sweetness along the way.
