Shows why Monterey reds are still struggling to garner acclaim, with ample evidence of the dreaded "veggies"--the aromas are reminiscent of the marinated peppers at the local deli. It’s too bad, because there’s some rich, sweet fruit underneath and the mouthfeel is wonderfully plush.

Offers a way-out nose with an odd assortment of aromas including overripe fruits, cocktail syrup, and a shellac-like note. Rich mouthfeel with buttery, caramel flavors, but seems overdone, and/or is fading fast.

This one’s got an engrossing nose full of citrus, spice and everything nice. Fairly soft and elegant, with vanilla, butterscotch and tropical fruit character. Medium long, clean and spicy as it closes out.

A very fine Pinot Noir that shows the crispness of its Central Coast origins, and also plenty of richness. Offers waves of cherries, red currants, cola and cedar, with a pleasantly stimulating bitterness. Drink this complex, food-friendly wine now and through 2011.

There’s too much oak interfering with this Chardonnay, which was grown just below the Santa Lucia Highlands. The underlying fruit is fine, suggesting crisply ripe nectarines and pears, but the oak buries it under a plaster of smoky caramel and butterscotch.

What a nice wine this is, fruity and wonderfully bright and crisp in citrus acidity. It doesn’t taste very oaky, despite barrel fermentation, and that allows those pure Monterey peach, lime, apricot and papaya flavors to shine.

Here’s a good everyday Merlot. It’s soft and dry, with good chocolate and blackberry flavors that persist on the finish.

No oak, nothing but the Musque clone, with its bright acids and gooseberry, grapefruit, lime and fig flavors. Easy to drink, and as versatile as dry white wines get with an enormous array of food.

From the winery’s vineyard at the foot of the Santa Lucia Highlands comes this ripe, pleasant wine. It’s dry and crisp, even a little sharp, with full-bodied wintergreen mint, cherry, coffee and herb flavors. Drink now.

After a very successful ’04, San Saba’s ’05 Chard is a bit of a letdown. It’s still very fruity in lemongrass, lime and pineapple fruit, and shows that lovely, crisp Monterey acidity. But it’s also too sweet in oaky vanilla, with a sugary, cotton candy finish.
