Talk about a wine that makes you take notice. This is simply great modern Rioja. The nose is creamy but honest, with black fruit, mocha and finely tanned leather. The palate gives the whole range of berry and tree fruits, with expansive tannins and just enough core acidity to make it stunning. Ultra stylish and delicious; another huge success for the Eguren family that owns San Vicente and other Rioja properties.

Smoky and rich, with hints of raisin, black cherry and chocolate scurrying about the nose. Meaty plum, cherry and blackberry flavors form a seamless palate that slides easily onto the coffee-filled finish. A touch of green pepper and herb character to the nose leads one to question ripeness, especially considering how rich the wine’s neighbors are. But this wine is fine, with spice, balance and character. It’s the type of Rioja that can dance from a tasting to the dinner table—no small feat these days. With perfect mouthfeel and length, it’s a winner.

Once again this is a stalwart modern-style Rioja with a mix of floral aromas, licorice, blackberry and coconut. The palate is both lively and subtle, and the flavor profile shows an impressive blend of cherry, plum, cream and cocoa, while the finish is long and smooth. A high-quality wine that should impress. Drink now through 2015.

Lots of bacon, leather and earth coat the nose of this vanguard-style Rioja, but unlike the spectacular 2001, the ’02 is not nearly as deep and ethereal. Blame the cool, wet vintage and take solace in the fact that it’s still a rich, almost syrupy red with integrated tannins and lushness. What’s missing is the wine’s patented layering and complexity.
