Expert NoteJanuary 12, 2012
One of Chile’s go-to Best Buy Cabernets. Always solid and well made, with this vintage giving off hickory, rubber and blackberry aromas in front of a rich, tannic palate of wild berry, mesquite and leathery flavors. Roasted and heady on the finish, with big bones and structure.

Dry, spicy and with good fruit aromas. The palate is tight and scouring, with full acidity. Cherry and cassis flavors are shrill and high-toned, while the finish is solid, tannic and mildly herbal.

Even if this isn’t the best Casa Real in recent years, it stands out from the crowd and doesn’t have to work hard to do so. The nose is tight and clean, with leather, spice and cherry aromas. The palate is packed with cherry and cassis, and the finish is lively but balanced. Despite a down vintage, this is Chilean Cabernet at its finest. Imported by Vineyard Brands.

Few $20 Cabs from anywhere are going to deliver like Medalla Real does. From first impressions, which include aromas of toast, coffee, prune and devilish berry, you know it’s a good one. The feel is generous and the balance spot on, so the plum, berry, coffee and chocolate flavors have structure and support. A complete wine with length, mint and lavish tannins.

Not often do you find blends of Cabernet Franc, Cabernet Sauvignon and Carmenère. And it’s been a while (1999) since we last tasted it; this version is ripe, a bit hard and very, very serious. The nose has complex olive, cassis and herb aromas, while the balanced but raging palate is ripped, tannic and fully acidic. Drink now, but with food.

Expert NoteJanuary 12, 2012
Great color; spicy and full of plum-based aromas. Lucid from start to finish, and a true overachiever in this class of wine. Flavors of cherry and nectarine are fresh and full. Finishes clean as crystal. Perfect for a spring picnic. Not imported.

Expert NoteJanuary 12, 2012
More vegetal than fruity, with aromas of green bean, tobacco and pasty fruit. The palate is hard yet not tannic or fierce, with lactic flavors of plum mixed with green herbs. Seems like one of those classic old-school Merlots with green elements and not much going for it.

Expert NoteJanuary 12, 2012
Fresh off the boat, this youthful SB pitches a no-hitter’s worth of pungent grapefruit, passion fruit, cucumber and thistle. Seems to be shooting for the New Zealand style, but it’s true-blue Casablanca Sauvignon. Crisp as stones and zesty, with a hint of pickle on the finish.

Expert NoteJanuary 12, 2012
Quite floral despite having spent 14 months in French oak. With 15% Maipo fruit in the blend, the wine veers toward raspberry and cherry, while the finish is darker, dealing licorice and some fudge. Has the right acid-tannin balance. Powerful enough without being tough.

A bit hard and dark at first, yet despite rubbery, leathery aromas this evolves into a fine everyday Malbec. The palate hits with punch and pop; it’s jumpy and packed with boysenberry, blueberry and blackberry flavors. A fruit bomb for sure, but one with balance and New World intensity that many people are looking for.
