Expert NoteJanuary 12, 2012
Shows the ill effects of age on this style of wine already. The vibrant, fresh fruit is fading, being replaced by some dusty spice notes.

This Amarone tastes very sweet and mature. It’s a spice- and oak-driven wine that tastes older than it really is because of its resiny patina of molasses and pine and austere flavors of dried prunes and raisins. It does offer thick concentration and extra sweetness on the close.

Amarone Proemio shows mature fruit aromas of black cherry and blackberry jam backed by elegant tones of clove, pepper, cola and cedar wood. The wine represents a smooth, clean and traditional style that would pair with grilled steak or roast pork.

Here’s a pale pink rosé made with traditional Veronese grapes (Corvina, Rondinella and Molinara) that imparts nice floral tones and aromas of small forest fruit. Delicate overall, there are some sharper, spicier highlights in the mouth where the wine shows good length.

When shopping for Pinot Grigio, the Delle Venezie appellation should tip you off to easy-drinking, affordable wines. This expression is no exception and you will encounter aromas of lemon, pear and peach.

Expert NoteJanuary 12, 2012
Tree bark, sulfur and leather aromas interfere with the fruit. It’s herbal, with dried cherry and raspberry providing what hook there is. It’s lean, with firm acidity, thus it comes across fresh. But the flavors aren’t pure enough to take it further.

Santi Merlot - 1999

Expert NoteJanuary 12, 2012
A tired, browning hue is confirmed on nose and palate, where citrus rind and leather mix with fast-fading dried cherry fruit. The finish is dry and herbal. For a ’99 this seems prematurely aged, yet it has some of the better qualities of an older wine: texture, tannins and leather.

Expert NoteJanuary 12, 2012
Modest red-fruit aromas in the cherry and rhubarb category start it toward a fresh, light, zesty palate. Don’t be looking for depth and meatiness here or you’ll be disappointed; it’s a lot more like a simple Valpolicella table wine than classic Amarone. That said, it’s clean and focused.

Expert NoteJanuary 12, 2012
Here’s a sophisticated and austere ripasso made from Corvina (75%) and Rondinella with aromas of old spice, dried figs and prunes. There’s cinnamon and crushed cardamom at the back and the wine seems older than what you can expect from a 2006 vintage. Drink it now. Imported by Frederick Wildman & Sons, Ltd.

Melibéo characterizes the natural freshness and easy informality of the Lugana region. The wine invites and surprises the palate with its tonic aromas of peach, pear, sage and honey. Those aromas are followed by medium consistency and perky crispness.
