Beautiful everyday Zin, just picture perfect Foothills. Dry and spicy, with blackberry, cherry, licorice, cola and wild thyme, but never heavy. The wine has a silky, elegant lightness. This is a fabulous ten dollar bottle of Zin.

Wonderful, rewarding Zin that somehow got the fruit enormously ripe, yet maintains an elegantly silky balance and modest alcohol. Floods the palate with spicy blackberry, cherry, licorice and cola pie filling flavors, soft and luscious, while remaining thoroughly dry.

A few years back, veteran winemaker Dave Crippen decided to pick his Viognier earlier. “I learned from Jed Steele that my wines need acidity to get away from overripeness and flabbiness,” he says. That lesson shows in this crisp wine, where the tanginess offsets the slightly sweet Meyer lemon, green apple, peach and peppery spice flavors. Most of the grapes were grown at the well-regarded Mohr Fry Ranches, in Lodi, with a little Sèmillon from Amador. The brand is from Renwood.

What a nice PG, at this price and even more expensive. Tremendously likeable for its well-ripened pineapple, apple, peach, fig, pear, honeysuckle and cinnamon spice flavors. A dash of Viognier certainly helps. Finishes a little sweet, but balanced with crisp acidity.

Young, sharp, dry and jammy, with freshly picked cherry and blackberry flavors and a burst of peppery green thyme and dill. Turns tannic on the finish. Shows real flair. What a great by the glass restaurant wine.

Expert NoteJanuary 12, 2012
Alone of all Santino’s wonderful ’03 Zins, this is one I can’t recommend because it’s raisiny. Opens with that telltale baked fruit and caramelized brown sugar aroma of Port, then turns dry and fiercely tannic, with little possibility of improvement.

Says Syrah on the label, but it contains a dollop of Nebbiolo and Mourvèdre. Despite the light color, the wine is deeply flavored, although dry, with a complex array of red cherry, strawberry, tea, herb and spice flavors. Best of all is the refreshing acidity, which makes this wine a natural for food.
