Dark and toasty, it brings pleasing, lightly sweet berry flavors of raspberry and strawberry, along with tangy acids and crisp, polished tannins. There seems to be some new oak showing also, in the finishing flavors of buttered toast and caramel. For the modest price, it’s a fine bottle.

A Bordeaux blend from estate-grown grapes, this chewy, flavorful wine shows a lot of promise for this newly-minted AVA. Fig and plum and black cherry flavors are intermixed with moist earth, balsamic and charcoal. The acids provide good definition; the only soft spot is the finish, which turns a bit volatile.

This is mostly Syrah, with small amounts of Cinsault, Mourvèdre and Grenache included. The Snake River Valley AVA crosses from Idaho into eastern Oregon; these are Idaho grapes as far as can be ascertained. The wine is tannic and well-made, with deeply-flavored, meaty fruit character. Wild berries and plums are suggested, with much darker streaks of coffee, licorice, smoke and earth. The alcohol (almost 15%) shows through in some residual heat.

A full, husky set of clean but nondescript red-fruit aromas lead into a firm palate of strawberry and raspberry. The finish is smooth, but light, and throughout it gives off an air of confidence despite some hard tannins. A nice surprise from a state better known for potatoes. —M.S.

A bit gamy for some, but this blackberry- driven Syrah has a ripe, creamy mouthfeel and a long, softly tannic finish, so if you don’t mind a little funk in your Syrah, climb aboard.
