More than a touch of green tobacco leafiness shows here. The berry fruit is light, the wine somewhat astringent. There’s a touch of earthy complexity, but not much depth or length.

A very herbal wine, with sage and thyme flavors. There are solid, dry tannins that mask the black fruits and red berry tastes. This is a wine that obviously needs time to develop, promising a serious, tannin-layered style.

There’s a dark and moody feel to this wine, with moderately intense aromas of black plum, blackberry, violet and black licorice. The mouth is robust and fairly full with a creamy texture and concentrated black fruit flavors accented by notes of pepper and tea leaves. The tannins are firmly structured yet approachable, with the impression of roasted cocoa nibs lingering on the finish. Drink now–2012.

Beautiful aromas of lightly toasted red apple skins, peach pit and pineapple core draw you in immediately, while the ripe fruit flavors in the medium weight mouth keep you invested. Moderately intense and balanced, this would be a lovely match for roasted chicken.

This opens with a complex bouquet of dark berry, earth, soy, pine and herbs. It’s balanced, lean and darkly fruited on the palate, but though nicely flavored, it’s a little hollow, and doesn’t show the depth hoped for from the dimensions of the nose. Finishes dry, with even tannins. Drink through 2005. —M.M.

A heavyweight, dominated by candy and toffee aromas. Its lack of acidity is redeemed by the concentration of the fruit and by the intensity of the wood and spice, which make a firm background.

Dark and wild, aromas of black berry and raspberry are intertwined with notes of whole tobacco leaf, sweet spice and a hint of licorice on the nose. The palate is lush and concentrated, loaded with more dark fruit flavors that are lifted by accents of white pepper, smoked meat and a mocha-infused finish. Balanced and decadent with an overall creaminess.

Intense earth, meat and game aromas accent the blackberry and blueberry fruit in this somewhat controversial, medium-weight wine. The peppery finish offers dried plum and fig, a tart smoky note and metallic elements. The earthiness, even dung-iness, while complex and challenging, is not for everyone.
