This Barolo, made within the township of Barolo, opens with a slightly brownish, amber appearance and delivers earth-driven aromas of licorice, white mushroom, pressed violets and cola. Pair this elegant and traditional wine with game hen stuffed with chestnuts and chopped garden herbs.

Barolo Vigna Merenda opens with a bright bouquet composed of cherry, spice, floral and balsam elements. This is also an extremely mineral-driven wine that exposes a vein of graphite or crushed stone at its core. Thanks to the wine’s natural structure and long persistency, it would make a perfect pairing partner to any dish with black truffles.

From the Merenda cru of Barolo, this vineyard-designate wine delivers bright and elegant tones of wild berries, cola, cedar, licorice and white pepper. The wine shows excellent balance between the firmness of the tannins and freshness of the fruit. Drink after 2015.

With five hectares of vines, Scarzello is a family-run, boutique winery with a keen focus on traditional Barolo winemaking. This is a bright and ethereal wine with pretty tones of wild berry, forest floor, dried tobacco and dark cola. In the mouth, the wine is vibrant and tonic and fresh menthol flavors appear on the close.

Plummy and chocolaty, with big black cherry flavors that seem a trifle hollow at the core. Tangy acids on the finish add to that impression. If this knits together and fills out over the next several years, this rating will seem conservative.

There’s slight sweetness here in the form of soft oak elements that glide easily together with the natural fruitiness and freshness of Barbera. There’s nice personality and dimension and the wine is smooth and soft on the finish (save for that prickly touch of acidity you should expect).
