Serious Zinfanatics have another wine to consider with this big, bold and impressive release from way up on Mount Veeder. It’s dense in blackberry, cherry, cola, tangerine, fig and dusty Asian spice flavors that go on and on, lasting into a long finish that’s thoroughly dry. Just delicious now, and with the tannic integrity to last for years.

Mount Veeder is one of the best sources of Zinfandel in California, and this bottling shows why. It’s very dry, richly textured and elegant, with succulent flavors of black, blue and red berries, currants, carob, tobacco, herbs, pepper and Asian spices. Drink now with with beef and pork dishes.

Superripe in the modern style, with blackberry, plum, chocolate and anise-cinnamon flavors that taste so sweet, it’s like a fruit pie, with the smoky, butter-glazed, caramelized crust. But the wine is actually fully dry. With its ultrarich, fine tannins, it calls to mind the perfect steak, in a brown butter sauce. Drink now.

Brawny and dry now, with chunky, hard tannins giving a lockdown feel to the blackberries and cherries. But it’s very rich and dynamic, with a long finish, and could be an ager. Try after 2010.

A pleasant, easy-drinking red, with some real elegance. Tastes very extracted in berry, currant and chocolate flavors, almost sweet like a pastry, but turns nicely dry and rich in tannins towards the finish. Drink now.

This is a very big Zinfandel, exuberant and lush in fruit. It floods the palate with blackberries, cherries, mulberries, plums and currants, complexed with smoky oak and spices. Fine now with steak fajitas or a juicy cheeseburger.

Brawny, bone dry and peppery, a big, full-bodied blend of Syrah and Cabernet Sauvignon that needs decanting or aging to make it drinkable. Hard tannins overwhelm the blackberries, mulberries and cedar. Try late 2010.

The pedigree of this Syrah is top-notch. The vineyard was planted by one of the owners of the fine Cabernet house, Surh Luchtel, and one of the winery’s co-owners works at the von Strasser winery. The wine itself shows promise, but is a little too ripe and sweet for comfort, with jammy, stewed blackberry, cherry and cola flavors that have been well-oaked.

This is a very good Cabernet that shows its mountain origins in the thick tannins and overall concentration. It’s superrich in blackberries, black currants and crème de cassis, with a tangy minerality. There’s also a cut of acidity that makes the mouthfeel tart, and will never go away. Seems at its best over the next few years for youthful beauty.
