Bright and fresh on the palate, with zippy citrus and gooseberry aromas up front. They continue along the palate, blending with melon and herb flavors to deliver a pleasing , refreshing quaff.

This unblended Cab pours as dark as they come, and the aroma is muted, indicating a baby wine. What reaches the nose is largely the smoky, spicy smell of oak barrels. Oak dominates the taste, too, although it’s obvious there’s some good, rich blackberry fruit inside. Aging it is a gamble.

A nice, lush wine with a lot of smoky oak and lees framing well-ripened apple and peach flavored fruit. Feels rich and creamy in the mouth, and oriental spices tingle the palate on the long finish.

Unfined and unfiltered, this is a superextracted wine, almost chunky in the mouth and full of red and black stone fruit and berry flavors. The tannins are sizable and very dry. A few years of age will soften it.

Lush yet bright, with black cherry, black currant, chocolate, cedar, spice and sweet oak flavors. Tannins are a bit powdery and the finish is moderate in length. A fine treat for after dinner.

Smells and tastes pretty good, with currant notes accented by considerable oak, which brings vanilla, smoke and sweet wood-sap flavors. Yet the tannins are enormous and problematic, striking midpalate and leaving the mouth feeling numb, and the depth of flavor just isn’t there to counterbalance them.

There’s a schizophrenic aroma here, which conjoins ripe blackberry and cassis with green, herbal, minty notes, all in one sniff. That split continues in the mouth, where the blackcurrant flavors are invaded by mint, and tough, astringent tannins numb the palate through the finish.

Tastes overripe and dull, with cooked blackberry and stewed blueberry flavors that lack the acidity to brighten and provide balance. Ready now.

This mountain-grown wine is a Cabernet-based Bordeaux blend. It’s bone dry and hard in tannins and not showing well now. There’s a big heart of blackberries and currants that should emerge sometime after 2011, after which it could become sweet and mellow.
