Dark, superextracted in fruit, and with oak detailing, the ’02 Eagle is drinkable now, due to its soft, creamy mouthfeel. Floods the palate with black cherry, crème de cassis and milk chocolate flavors. Has enough rich tannins and acids to balance and hold through 2010.

Ripe and flashy, offering tiers of cassis, chocolate and charry new oak flavors, wrapped in sweet, smooth tannins. Has an acidic bite midpalate that balances the lushness, and will add to the wine’s cellar-worthiness. Defines sheer power, but never loses control. Best now and through 2017, at least.

The oak certainly screams out, and it’s good oak, freshly hewn and smokily charred. Underneath is superripe fruit, plummy to the point of milk chocolate pudding. This big, heavily extracted Cab is classic Eagle in style.

Big nose, dense and deep aromas, sweet aromas of black cherry and pepper scents intertwine, high toned and exotic; big sweet flavors in the mouth, black cherry cider with a kick; extracted fruits, rich and ripe; more complex than the other wines from this vintage served at the dinner; there is a lot of acidity in this wine, as well as powerful tannins, but the wine retains balance and finesse; subtle flavors of black leather and tobacco mix with ripe fruits; rounded edges and a lingering finish; deserves its reputation. Powerful and very intense nose, blackberry jam, alcohol, herbs and sweet grasses, floral and aromatic; full-flavored and intense on the palate; powerful and rich fruit flavors, blackberry jam; lots of sweetness in this wine, but also a ton of acidity and lurking tannins that ebb and flow on the palate, making the wine alternately dry and rich; the wine has a well-balanced profile, and is actually quite forward and complete now, while at the same time clearly showing signs of youth and lack of full integration; a tour-de-force and deserving of its reputation among the top of the California cabs.
