Expert NoteJanuary 12, 2012
Typical of Navarra, this Cabernet-Tempranillo blend shows a hint of green tobacco and herbal-spicy cherry aromas on the nose. The palate is crisp with cherry and strawberry flavors, while citrus essence and berry skins carry the firm but fresh finish. Streamlined but true to Navarra’s style.

Cabernet Sauvignon from Navarra is always going to be vintage-dependent, so in a perfect year like 2005 a wine like this shows its best. The nose offers coconut, dill and cedar, which sets the stage for a lengthy, honest palate of roasted berry, cola, herb and tobacco flavors. Not a sweet or “fruity” style per se, but a cut above and a good terroir wine that reflects its year.

Tangerine, orange blossom and lychee aromas are well melded and not overpowering or forced. The palate is smooth and comfortable, with just enough acidity to push the honeyed lychee, spice and white pepper flavors to where they should be. Long and properly sweet on the finish. Good for desserts or cheeses.

Chalky, oaky tannins give this wine some body, but I don't know where the fruit is hiding. A hint of tangy plum skin pops up on the back end; other than that, there's not much here.

Fairly flat on the nose, and also innocuous on the palate. Flavors of green melon and nectarine are modest at best, and while the mouthfeel is decent, the overall character of the wine isn’t that exciting. Finishes pithy, citric and mealy. Yet another mediocre Navarran Chardonnay.

Black plum fruit is flattened by smooth woodsy tannins on the palate; oak and white pepper notes bookend the plum fruit core. Medium-bodied and simple.

A typically reserved Navarran wine is what this is. The nose offers dry red fruit, spice and not much else. The palate is mildly citric and herbal, but there’s enough cherry and leather to carry things to a medium-length finish of dill, vanilla and spice. A nice and simple food wine.

A black beauty, medium-weight, balanced and chewy. This wine’s all about ripe blackberry and black plum flavors, without much in the way of wood to distract you from the fruit. Deep ink, spice and plum aromas play on the nose. —D.M.

This tells us why there is hardly any Mazuelo bottled by itself; usually it’s a blending grape. So what’s here is superlean and tart, but fresh. It will survive best with salty salami or ham. By itself it’s scouring.

Clean, fresh and layered up front, with peach, cherry and nectarine flavors and then apricot on the finish. The feel is good throughout, with no excess weight or sweetness. An uncomplicated, no-frills rosé, which is what Navarra and Señoría de Sarria do best.
