Here’s a clean, vibrant sparkler that offers plenty of high-class character at a giveaway price. It has a kick of peach-fruit flavor, and the bubbles are a bit rough and jagged. But it’s perfect for big gatherings that don’t call for the expensive stuff.

Enough complexity shows in this great-value sparkler’s nut, plum and ginger notes to keep the educated taster interested. It’s medium-full with a hint of sweetness and an even, persistent bead. Soft, but not mushy, the pear-green herb finish is refreshing, with unexpected length for a wine in this price range.

The vanilla and pineapple aromas are attractive; on the palate the flavors turn sweet. A rich, syrupy texture adds to this impression. Most Oz wineries are on to the ’98 or ’99 vintages; this may be a bit long in the tooth.

Seaview (part of the Penfolds group) is clearly aiming for freshness and youthful fruitiness rather than developed flavors. And it succeeds with a rich, yet relatively dry sparkler that sports mouthfuls of lemons, melons and peaches.

It's hard to quibble with the fact that this wine almost always overdelivers for the price: It's fairly widely available and is good alone, or in sparkling cocktails. This year's edition shows wheat flour, ginger and a banana note—unexpected, maybe, but still gets the job done.
