Waxy on the nose, with barrel hints as well as buttered toast and vanilla. Fairly limited in scope, but nicely textured. Flavors of apple, banana and custard lead into a lemon and pineapple finish.

Shows some nice red berry fruit with tobacco and white pepper accents, but a negative note between green pepper and sour cream distracts and detracts considerably. A tasty wine with nice feel and decent length upon opening, it disappointingly goes downhill as the off-putting element ascends. —M.M.

After a soda-like start that may seem aggressive, this one really settles into a groove. The nose blends citrus and wild green-herb aromas, while the palate has perfectly composed orange and peach flavors. The finish is solid and around every turn it holds the road. Great for the price.

Lime and apple candy aromas are approachable and likable, while the palate is solid and structured, but a touch foamy. Flavors of apple, pear, green melon and lime are dry, crisp and pithy, while the wine’s freshness and spunk are admirable.

Made in a bone-dry style, this lean sparkler carries a fair amount of SO2, which slowly blows off to reveal a hard, tart, steely wine resembling an ultra brut. It is elegant and austere, best suited to accompany salty appetizers. —P.G.

This is an extremely dry, yeasty cava that is enlivened with subtle scents of clove and clover. As with the other wines from this well-known cava producer, the style is lean, lean, lean.

Mildly sugary on the nose, with creamy flavors of papaya mixed with grass. The acidity is spiky and the finish sort of scouring. Not a lot of depth, body or pizzazz, and it seems as though maybe some oak was thrown at it.

Big, bold and thoroughly modern, with pungent burnt-wood aromas and rich chocolaty flavors. The black cherry fruit is ripe and rewarding prior to a dry tannic finish. This wine is structured and woody, very typical of today’s Spanish reds.
