Expert NoteJanuary 12, 2012
It’s rare to see a Bordeaux-style blend from New Zealand’s South Island, but this is a notable exception that can be even better in other vintages. In 2004, it seems a little light and delicate, with slightly herbal, tomatoey aromas and cherry and herb flavors. The tannins are well-managed, giving it an easy-drinking quality, and you might even try this with the sorts of fish dishes you’d serve with Pinot Noir.

Shows good intensity and varietal character, offering up gooseberry and passion fruit flavors with just hints of sweat and bell pepper. Seems plump at first, but firms up on the finish, finishing quite grapefruity in the end.

Starts off with appealing cherry and spice shadings, but adds some rustic, adhesive bandage notes that build on the finish.

Attractive nose successfully melds floral scents with hints of diesel. Rich and slightly sweet—even a bit heavy—but the flavors of pears and mineral oil stay with you on the finish.

Expert NoteJanuary 12, 2012
Tasted shortly after bottling, this wine was showing some of the effects, displaying a slightly muted nose and closed palate. It’s still a pretty wine, blending cherries and vanilla in a light-bodied format. Imported by Robert Whale Selections Inc.

Pinot Gris isn’t often explosively aromatic, and this example is no exception, offering little more than modest melon and apple scents. Where the wine excels is in the mouth, marrying rich palate weight with density and a citrusy-chalky finish. A bit sweet, at 1.2% residual sugar. Imported by Robert Whale Selections Inc.

Expert NoteJanuary 12, 2012
This wine is nearly dry—increasingly rare for NZ Pinot Gris—with aromas of slightly stewed fruit: white grapes and pears with sprinklings of clove and cinnamon. It’s only medium weight, with a finish reminiscent of canned pears and a hint of tangerine. Drink now.

This zippy, fresh Savvy wakes up the palate like a citrus sorbet after a big meal. It’s refreshing with bright acidity and flavors of limes, smoke and just the barest hint of green pepper.

Packs boatloads of tropical fruit into a medium-weight package that’s clean and fresh, if somewhat fruity and simple. Good party Chardonnay.
