Expert NoteJanuary 12, 2012
It’s been cofermented with Viognier—instantly apparent in the spicy, citrus aromas that permeate the nose. An invigorating, lifted scent combines lemon and lime and orange peel with raspberry syrup and mocha, and that’s before you even taste it. It continues in an elegant style, with lovely, interesting flavors that blend together seamlessly and never overpower the palate. Notes of pine, wild herb and smoked meat add interest through the finish.

Expert NoteJanuary 12, 2012
Lots of floral notes on the nose, and a touch of alcohol, too. Opens into a full mouth of green-apple and herb flavors. Very good balance manages to be full and crisp at once. Clean, brisk finish with citrusy notes. Akin to an engaging adolescent maybe a touch awkward, but ambitious and appealing. Best Buy.

Expert NoteJanuary 12, 2012
A very spicy style, built upon substantial, tart, berry fruit. Tannins taste of tea leaves, and it finishes with a nice, balanced, moderately alcoholic (13.5%) bit of light toast.

Seven Hills Merlot - 2002

Expert NoteJanuary 12, 2012
Tart, tight, compact and almost dramatically austere when first opened, this estate-grown Merlot unwraps with pretty scents of blueberry pie, followed by clean flavors of blackberry and cassis. The compactness of the wine suggests that it will continue to evolve and merit a higher score in another year or so. For now, you will find intriguing suggestions of gravel and graphite, and the mix of rocks and blue fruits promises more interesting development down the road. Meanwhile, air it out.

Seven Hills Merlot - 2003

Expert NoteJanuary 12, 2012
Fragrant, with scents and flavors of pears and orange blossoms. This wine has 1.8% residual sugar, which qualifies it as off-dry, but it is still quite suitable for a wide range of foods, especially spicy Asian dishes. Full, fleshy and well-made, it delivers plenty of fresh fruit flavor with enough spice and acid to give a lift to the finish.

Seven Hills Riesling - 2001

Expert NoteJanuary 12, 2012
This is 100% varietal, all barrel fermented; it’s sharp and spicy, with light citrus, balanced acids, and ripe melony fruit. Still quite young, it is already hinting at honey in the finish, and done in a crisp, moderate style (mid-13% alcohol).

Seven Hills Viognier - 2008

Expert NoteJanuary 12, 2012
The residual sugar is 2.5%, keeping the alcohol under 11%, and with the generous natural acids of the vintage it balances out just fine. Truly Germanic in style, it carries suggestions of sweet honey and tea, coupled with the snap of natural acids and a mix of pretty fruits.

Expert NoteJanuary 12, 2012
Violets, lovely and fragrant, leap from this broad, soft and open Merlot, loaded with beautiful sweet black fruit. The oak is showing a lot of toast now but that’s not a criticism; this is really tasty, pleasing and a fine value.

This is clean and immaculate, with hints of dried herb under wild berry fruit. In the mouth it is relatively soft, yet a bit more pungent than the other Bordeaux reds from Seven Hills.
