Expert NoteJanuary 12, 2012
This lizard-labeled wine puts other critter wines to shame, offering a complex bouquet of coffee, leather, spice cake and dried fruit. Mouthcoating flavors of dried cherries and plums are framed by coffee, spice and leather and carried across the palate by a lush, softly tannic texture. Drink now–2012.

This Cab feels tall: not round, not muscular, but lanky and vertical. It's a textured wine, though, with sandy-floury tannins and a plum-and-cherry core. Aromas of stewy, dusty fruit, and powdery tannins on the finish, complete the pretty picture.

Expert NoteJanuary 12, 2012
Dark and rich, with aromas of cola and coffee and flavors of plum and cola. This is full-bodied, its 14.5% alcohol balanced by fruit intensity and richly textured tannins and the long finish. Drink 2010–2020.

Shingleback Shiraz - 2005

Expert NoteJanuary 12, 2012
This is an impressively endowed wine, but one that will have to rely on age for its complexity. Right now, its fruit (blackberries and cassis) is a bit simple upfront, then adds crisp acidity and firm tannins on the finish. Try in 2010.

Expert NoteJanuary 12, 2012
This is a rich, powerfully oaky Shiraz, but masses of fruit show through on the finish, offering hope for the future. Now, it will appeal to the same steakhouse crowds who love Silver Oak and Caymus, but in a year or two expect the oak to partially integrate and the wine to become more complete. Drink 2010–2015.

Expert NoteJanuary 12, 2012
Shingleback's 2007 Chardonnay is a full-bodied, richly textured rendition that avoids excessive weight by focusing on the crisp, citrusy aspects of the grape. Smoke and toast add complexity, while ample acids provide freshness and zest on the finish. Drink now.

Expert NoteJanuary 12, 2012
Powerful and intense on the nose, with jammy blackberry fruit framed by lashings of vanilla, but more intriguing and complex on the palate, as the flavors add layers of cola, coffee and chocolate. It’s full-bodied and round in the mouth, finishing firm enough to suggest short-term cellaring; drink now–2015.

Expert NoteJanuary 12, 2012
McLaren Vale is not renowned for its white wines, yet this Chardonnay is a very good, appealing sip. It’s medium-sized with apple and pear aromas and flavors dominating. It’s not noticeably oaky, either; a fresh, please-all style. 2,002 cases produced.

Expert NoteJanuary 12, 2012
A real crowd-pleaser, the 2005 Shingleback may not have quite the complexity of the 2004, but it’s still a fun, approachable wine. Cola and coffee notes accent plum and blackberry flavors, while the broad texture coats the mouth with soft tannins. Drink now–2012.

Expert NoteJanuary 12, 2012
Less rich and opulent than the winery’s 2005 release, the 2004 Show Reserve is a medium-bodied Shiraz that marries tart mixed-berry flavors with toast and vanilla shadings. The tannins are supple, the acids crisp, leaving a lingering, mouthwatering finish. Drink now–2012.
