Not the biggest, blackest or most extracted Shiraz, this is a more elegant, complex example, boasting hints of violets and espresso on the nose, alongside smoky, meaty notes and plenty of berry fruit. It’s fresh and not overly weighty, managing to seem light in weight without being light on flavor.

The most successful of the three Shottesbrooke Cabernets in 2005, this features bold cassis fruit that’s almost grapy in its intensity, framed by toasty, vanilla-scented oak. It’s full-bodied and muscular with a firm, crisp finish, factors that suggest it should improve over the next 2–3 years. A blend of 80% Cabernet Sauvignon, 15% Merlot and 5% Malbec.

This wine comes out of the chute smelling rich and opulent, with dense cassis, chocolate and mint overtones, but it’s relatively reined in and polite in the mouth, kept in check by crisp acids. The cassis turns to tart berries, picking up just a hint of cocoa on the finish.

Offers toasted caramel with root beer and tar; the palate displays sweet blackberries and blueberries. The tannins are smooth and the finish, juicy. Made to drink now. —C.S.

Complex aromas of bacon, blackberries and toasted coconut lead into a smooth mouthful of smoked meats, dark chocolate and black cherries. One taster referred to it as a Mounds bar. Finishes long, with juicy, tangy fruit flavors taking the lead.

Allegedly a step up from Shottesbrooke’s regular Cab, this is similarly crisp, with attractive aromatics of roasted peppers, cassis, tobacco and vanilla but with a pinched, narrow mouthfeel and a tart, crisp finish.

The mint and eucalyptus aromas are always an indication that you are about to consume a quality wine. Along with the blackberry and cocoa flavors there is a rich, juicy mouthfeel with firm tannins, then bright acidity to clean everything up. Approachable now but will last until 2010. —C.S.

A plump, medium-bodied Sauvignon Blanc with just a touch of residual sugar (3.5 g/l), this wine combines tropical notes of mango with honeyed citrus. It’s basically dry, finishing with lingering fruit flavors. Drink now.

Slightly higher-toned than many McLaren Vale Shirazes, with fruit that veers toward raspberry combining with hints of brown sugar, spice and fresh meat. It’s medium-bodied but potent, picking up nutty, chocolaty notes on the finsh. Drink now–2013.
