Expert NoteJanuary 12, 2012
An intriguing nose of pine needles, slight barnyard, and a hint of dill is layered over ripe black cherries. A dense, yet soft and seductive wine that should reward cellaring with even more complexities.

Clearly from a cool climate, dominated by tomato, mushroom and herb flavors just breaking into black cherry. Dry, with great acidity and complex tannins. This is a subtle Pinot that will appeal to tasters who enjoy thinking about what’s in their mouth. Editors’ Choice.

Like ’em big and deep, with a solid tannic structure? Here, rich black cherry and plum fruit wears smoky oak, herb and spice accents. But the fruit holds its own against the wood. The mouthfeel is rich and supple; the close long and evenly tannic. And it will be better in one to two years.

Expert NoteJanuary 12, 2012
Always a complex wine, Adam and Dianna Lee’s ’99 Hirsch is a bit rusty in color, with smoke, oak and baking spice aromas. The palate offers a complex conglomeration of spicy red fruit and licorice, while the finish provides length and smoky flavors akin to ham and bacon. Some drying tannins ensure that the structure is maintained throughout.

Expert NoteJanuary 12, 2012
Starts out with barnyard and forest floor aroma; eventually, some dried currant and raspberry emerge. There’s an abundance of depth to the funky, esoteric palate as well as the full allotment of tobacco and herbs. Is it an easy wine? Not at all. But connoisseurs could find it right up their alley.

Spicy and succulent, with superripe flavors of melted cherry jam, milk chocolate, raspberry pie filling, cola and pepper spice. Dry, but a little too soft for all that richness.

Siduri, based in Santa Rosa, California, is expanding their reach into Oregon. Current releases include this excellent Willamette Valley blend and a quartet of single-vineyard offerings. This wine is spicy, lightly touched with chocolate/nougat candy bar flavors, and nicely balanced, with moderate alcohol and firm acids.

Expert NoteJanuary 12, 2012
This bottling brings strawberry preserves right up front; it’s a light and spicy wine with immediate appeal. There’s plenty of acid—rarely an issue in Oregon—but not much depth. It’s got fruit and malted chocolate, and the finish lasts a bit longer than you might expect from the light fruit.

Expert NoteJanuary 12, 2012
An absolutely first-rate Pinot Noir that’s perfect for drinking now and over the next year or so. The texture is light and elegant, almost weightless, yet the raspberry, cherry, red licorice, cola and spice flavors pack a whallop.

Jammy and big, combining fruit-forward flavors of cherries and boysenberries with a streak of smoked meat or game. Acidity is high through the tart finish, and the rich, thick tannins suggest a wine that will improve for a year or two in the cellar.
