Expert NoteJanuary 12, 2012
Vanilla and a lot of oak blend with baked apple on the nose, while the palate is grabby and resiny, with drawn, oak-heavy flavors of baked apple and vanilla. For a winery that rarely misses with its red wines, this is one that’s o.k. but probably not worth the money.

No frills but also no shrills. This is basic Tempranillo in fine form; it smells like ripe berries and rubber, while the palate is deep and full of plum, blackberry, chocolate and vanilla. It’s a warm, fairly rich wine that’s not the least bit complicated. For those faithful to Rioja, it will do the trick.

Like almost all wines from this label, the welcome mat is rolled out. The nose shows textbook tea, herb, black cherry and leathery notes, while the palate is round, pure in feel, and full, with sous bois, light oak and dark fruit flavors. Long and persistent on the finish. A wine that gets it right.

Not even El Bosque could escape the difficulties of the cool, extended 2007 vintage. While typically dark and bulky on the nose, it’s also dull by Bosque standards, with oaky mocha and coffee stepping in as filler. The body is drawn and tannic, with oak, resin and dark berry flavors. Finishes resiny as well. By no means bad, but given Bosque’s precedent it’s not stellar.

Broad, bold and buttery, with aromas of toasted white peach, flower blossom, vanilla and mild oxidation. The blend is 65% Viura with Malvasia and white Garnacha, and overall it’s a round, stout, creamy wine with apple, vanilla and toasty, resiny flavors and finishing notes. A little heavy and sticky but nice for barrel-aged white Rioja.

Dark fruit, rubber band, bacon and floral aromas give this go-to Rioja a modern outlook and a convincing bouquet. Solid, juicy and tight in the mouth, with flavors of lifted black cherry, cassis, plum, mocha and vanilla. A healthy wine that just makes the level of excellence. Drink now through 2013.

The bouquet offers raspberry and strawberry fruit, which is followed by a meaty mouthful of plum, coffee and bitter chocolate. The finish is defined by mocha, and the feel is derived from firm tannins. This wine feels warm, arguably borderline hot. But that’s probably more a result of youth than anything else.

Only a select portion of a prized 30-year-old vineyard gives fruit to the wine named after the Eguren brothers’ great grandfather. It’s rich, ripe and impeccably balanced, with a brilliant dark-purple tint and an avalanche of finishing toast, chocolate and tannin. Hold until 2009. 330 cases made. Imported by Tempranillo, Inc.

Smooth and fresh, with bright berry on the nose and also some well-applied oak. In the mouth, raspberry and cherry flavors are spiced up with a note of black pepper. Lean, clean and moderately tangy; a basic but good Rioja in the truest sense.

The bouquet of this aging Rioja features a good mix of berry fruit, tree bark and earth. Across the palate flows a stream of strawberry, cherry and coffee. Firm tannins create a masculine mouthfeel, while the finish is dry with a tad of buttery oak. Gets better with airing and patient swirling.
