Price aside, this is an outstanding effort in need of several years' cellaring. SMoky, meaty aromas open into cherry-berry fruit. Rich and full on the palate, it closes with a long dusty finish. Anticipated maturity: 2003-2015.

This is a nicely made, varietally correct Pinot Noir from a region known more for its Bordeaux varieties (and increasingly Syrah). Delicate scents of tea, rose petals and cranberries set the stage for a light-bodied wine that features juicy raspberry and cranberry flavors with some herbal notes.

A simple, fruity wine that features ample pink grapefruit and gooseberry aromas and flavors, this is a bit of a one-trick pony, but it delivers those bold fruit flavors with authority. Drink up.

This medium-bodied Chardonnay displays a hint of burnt rubber on the nose, then opens to show notes of brown butter and apple. There’s a scour of citrus that comes in on the finish, along with a slightly chalky note. Drink now.

This wine’s modest strawberry and sous-bois notes are pretty unremarkable. It’s light in body and short of finish.

There’s isn’t much Pinot Noir being grown in Hawke’s Bay, but this bottling is solid, offering up slightly briary scents of plum and black cherries that carry slightly feral notes. Medium-weight on the palate, with supple tannins. Imported by Klassen Wines.

Like several other Hawke’s Bay wineries, Sileni has moved their Sauvignon Blanc sourcing to Marlborough. In this case, the results are pretty impressive. Pineapple, passion fruit and grapefruit notes all ring harmoniously on the nose and palate, yielding a fruity, crisp wine that satisfies the craving for solid Sauvignon Blanc.
